Sharp wire embedded into the seal, pull the wire, it comes out around the window, then the window just falls out easy as can be... until then, held very firm...

Not sure if that system will be approved in USA for Highway Vehicles... but I have seen that kind of thing done for other types of vehicles...

Let’s just hope it’s better glass than that embarrassing demonstration in front of the hole world.

‘’Hey OJ, try in these gloves”’.

"Armored" windshield glass seems not much different than current windows, except hopefully it wont crack from rocks.
The side glass being laminated "armor glass" is the weird thing that I think is actually not allowed. Theres a reason cars dont have laminated side windows.

go through it? was that the point of that failed demonstration?

I really was shocked and at the same time i felt bad for Musk.

Only in the Tesla world, that big mistake was turned into T-Shirt sales.

Amazing

The demonstration failed but they showed the video of them throwing metal balls just as hard and the glass not breaking. They believe the glass broke because they literally hit the door with a sledgehammer moments before the glass test. There was also the demonstration where they dropped a metal ball from a much much higher height (and bigger ball) than they did with regular glass and it didn't even crack.

I'm excited to see youtubers test out the durability of the glass and stainless steel

It wasn't, but that ball would have gone through almost any other car's side window.

The funny part is you know they did that test like 100s of times before the presentation etc! Nothing like the demonstration to make everything go wrong. It was hilarious!

Yeah, Elon has some choice words if you listen closely after it broke. The video released after that showed the successful demonstration was apparently back stage right before they started. Some people thought that it was different glass and someone messed up, but the same glass worked perfectly...before they beat the truck with a sledgehammer...

Of course it would be shocking. First rule of live demos: something always goes wrong. In a way it was great PR. I bought one, but the quality was poor.

The steel ball didn't go through, did it?

Is there?

It seems like there's minimums, but no limits to the hardness or laminate resistance of auto glazing. https://info.glass.com/regulations/auto-glass-codes-regulations/

If you can find the right rule, link it.

found a butt ton of info here https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/retrie...e&n=pt49.6.571&r=PART&ty=HTML#se49.6.571_1205

I guess its not a rule, it says lamitaed glass (passing the tests) can be used anywhere in the car. It seems unsafe to me though. for fire, or water emergencies, having the option to break glass and escape is something that has saved peoples lives. perhaps it isnt THAT hard to break with a sharp window breaking tool.

... that was a stroke of genius... got everyone talking about a truck that most had not even heard about. Caused people to look into it more... It struck me as odd that within 30 minutes of that demo, they had both windows replaced for the demo rides. You can see in some videos the guys walking past with the broken windows. Now, in a one-off prototype, how likely is it to have spare windows lying around? Hmm....
