Hi all. The goal here is to find the best remote charging system for charging the cybertruck while away from infrastructure. Nothing to max charge but enough to get enough juice that will allow for access back to society and hit up a charger.

Currently I have a Firman WH3200 IE generator which statistically should allow for a trickle charge. The weird thing is my first attempt did not work and the truck did not charge. Not a big deal as this generator was bought for other reasons a long time ago.

My questions are:

1. Do any of you have a mobile generator that you have used to charge your cybertruck? If so what are you using?

2. Are any of you using a solar generator setup to run the trickle charge? If so what are you running?

Please keep it to setups that you have used to charge the CyberTruck and not other Teslas. I will probably duplicate the best setup and I would hate to drop coin on systems that don’t work for the cybertruck.

When you say it didn’t work, what exactly do you mean? You had the generator running, plugged in the 110 volt mobile charger, and it didn’t charge the truck? If you take the same charger and plug it in to a standard 110 volt outlet, does it charge the truck?

I don't meet the requirements of your post yet, but I have had success while camping with a 1.2kW solar generator and a 120v15a ac trickle charge. Week long camping trip at the beach typically leaves our model 3 more or less completely recharged.

I intend to do the same with the CT using the same generator in the near future. Just need to get the family schedules all aligned for a trip

Buy:
EG4 6000XP
and
EG4-WallMount Indoor Battery | 48V 280Ah | 14.3kWh

Cost $4,796.00 and it will give you about 35 miles. It weighs around 330 lbs and would take up about the same space as a spare tire.

You could add more of the batteries to make it more cost effective. ~35 miles each battery.

Edit: It also allows you to plug in solar, so just replace the vault door with a lifting solar tonneau cover.

My generators control panel has Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) connectors.

I had the generator running, plugged in the mobile charger and the truck wouldn't charge. The charger itself had a red light on it. I attempted to connect and reconnect the charger several times with no luck. Didn't do any additional troubleshooting as I had other things to do.

If you try the same charger in a standard wall outlet and it does charge the truck, then your generator isn’t providing sufficient voltage or current to the charger. Since the mobile charger should technically be able to run off of a 10 amp 110 volt circuit, there’s probably an issue with the generator itself.
If you try the same charger in a standard wall outlet and it doesn’t charge the truck, then it’s probably the charger (or the truck).
I only say any of this because the specs on your generator should be more than enough to at least slow charge the truck, so it sounds suspicious for having another problem.

95% of portable generators do not connect neutral and ground together. Household outlets all have neutral and ground connected together in the power panel and any EVSE works fine with those outlets

The standard fix (discussed on nearly every EV forum there is) to charge from a portable generator is to buy a NEMA 5-15P plug (standard household plug which will fit any outlet) and a pair of 1/2 watt, 100K ohm resistors. Connect one resistor between the hot pin and the ground pin, the other resistor between the neutral pin and the ground pin and then put that plug into one of the outlets on the generator. Plug your EVSE into the other outlet on the generator and then it will charge your car.

This is my first electric car so bare with me. If I am understanding what you are saying I need to buy one of these: https://www.amazon.com/NEMA-5-15P-Replacement-Plug-Construction/dp/B077GH57R9

Then get some resistors https://www.amazon.com/Projects-10EP512100K-100k-Resistors-Pack/dp/B0185FKGIC

Connect the resistors in the NEMA-5 Plug using the pins you mentioned, plug it into my generator. Then connect my charger into the next port?

I haven't done electrical work since I was in the Navy. Is there any good youtube videos out there with step by instructions? If not I will give it the good old college try.

This will probably be what I go far long term but will take time to get here.

Just buy this, mission accomplished. But fair warning, open frame generator might be harmful for EV because of "dirty" electricity. I would recommend inverter generator.

This with the max solar input of panels would work well. The hardest thing about the solar generators is finding ones that have a large solar input.

That's pretty good input for the price! Good find

This is an amazing product! I've never seen this before. Are there any other solutions like this on the market that I'm just too old school to notice? 1200W, that's great! I think I need this ? or at least something similar for the CT. Now I don't have to build it myself.
