Maybe they just changed the olive drab green primer/paint to black. Same step, just chose a different color. Maybe??why do you think they starting applying the black e-coating? isn't that an addl cost and time spent ?
…or black costs the same but looks better when modifying or repairing the truckBlack pigment was probably less expensive than the previously used greenish color.
Elon stated that Tesla must find ways to make the Cybertruck more affordable. This could one of many ways under the skin to lower their COG’s.
Up until then all CT production was being ran through the Pretreatment Ecoat process as the model Y does. They built a dedicated system for the CT and it came online around 25,000 built. As for why black I don't know other than all pillars A, B & C get powder coated black once the vehicle is Ecoated. Only for aesthetic purposes I think. The brownish green Ecoat is common on all vehicles. The color in the dip tank is gray then turns green when baked.why do you think they starting applying the black e-coating? isn't that an addl cost and time spent ?
I think it's just for aesthetics. The solution in the ecoat dip tank is DI water, Resin and Pigment. Just by changing the pigment color achieves the desired look. The battery enclosure, Front & rear cast and the cab all get ecoated. After baking the vehicle gets powder coated black on the A, B & C pillars and door sills for aesthetics.…or black costs the same but looks better when modifying or repairing the truck
The passenger safety cage is not painted so much for aesthetics but for corrosion resistance since it's made out of a blend of high-strength and very high strength steels which are prone to surface rust just from the humidity in the air. And I doubt Tesla would coat the casting just for aesthetics either, considering you can't readily see them. That's for corrosion resistance/electrical isolation too. It probably assists with the adhesion of whatever else they use to prevent galvanic corrosion too. It's engineered to last a long time.I think it's just for aesthetics. I was not suggesting Ecoating is for aesthetics just using black pigment was rather than using the common greenish color. Ecoating is for corrosion prevention and all modern cars are put through a PTED system prior to painting. The passenger safety cage is not painted so much for aesthetics but for corrosion resistance since it's made out of a blend of high-strength and very high strength steels which are prone to surface rust just from the humidity in the air.
