As much as I loved Avalancheā€˜s midgate design, CT would be much better for camping if they can make it work. Less like coffin due to height of the bed cover at one end, the glass roof and you donā€™t have to run the loud motor for climate control.

Yeah, I wish I could find the engineering sketch I saw months ago. It was cool...
I remember seeing something that showed where the tonneau rolled into also. There was discussion on this before and I searched everywhere trying to find it again. I started to wonder if I had dreamt it. Thanks for confirming I'm not going insane. (Or, joining me in the insanity...).

It was under the bed immediately behind the battery pack, if I remember correctly. It was smaller than the pic below, and not as round shaped, but the basic idea.

ye ive been trying to ignore how complicated of aamufacturing problem the mid gate would be, because I just want it to happen so much!

The issue is probably more structural than complex. The vault cover already passes through the mid-gate, and has no need of a wall there. Windows can roll down or fold up, and seats can fold down. These aren't even really uncommon features, either.

But what if I dump a load of gravel into the bed? Do I still need a wall if I then want to close the cover?

That's pretty much it. Here's a quote from Motortrend:

"Feeding the motors is Tesla's "latest" battery technology, of which the company has shared little. The standard battery pack is mounted underneath the cab, just forward of the roll-up tonneau cover's storage compartment (beneath the pickup bed floor), and offers about 300 miles of claimed range. A new, double-stacked battery will give a tri-motor Cybertruck up to 500 miles of range. A base single-rear motor Cybertruck will have up to 250 miles of range. Construction of the prototype is "unibody-on-frame" in the same vein as the new Land Rover Defender, but the production Cybertruck will be pure unibody."

I keep thinking the diagram I saw was from that article, but I don't see it. It must have been elsewhere.

Windows roll up in doors.

It rolls up past the window and under the seat, yes.

  • Well, the window could, as you suggested, roll down into the gate. Or fold up to the ceiling.
  • The vault cover could stay under the seat where it is.
  • And the back wall is just behind the seats. It could fold down with them.
  • Why can't the back wall of the cabin can't just be 'the tonneau cover': Why does it need to fold any where?

Lots of ways to do this.

Like @Crissa reminds us, there have been many incarnations of doors and tailgates that opened any which way and had retractable windows. The vault cover is on some kind of track more or less (except perhaps for the track) independent of the back way and window, and as noted it rolls down under the rear seats somewhere. So if there is a way to roll the vault cover off the track (if the track is even part of the gate), then there could be a folding gate.

I think that's mostly it. Kinda like making a convertible. If the back wall isn't fixed, they'll have to reinforce elsewhere.

Yeah.

But I hope they do it. There are so many times I'm carrying ten-foot poles or whatnot for some project and I would like to not pull put the roof rack or hang them out the back every time.

There are already compartments in the floor and sides of the bed.

-Crissa
I was just thinking about why they donā€™t let the batterypack extend further under the bed instead of stacking under only cab, but that is probably the answer. As well the aforementioned tonneau cover roll, air compressor, chargers and transformers etc that needs to be put somewhere.

Yes, and also the issue of decreasing the payload maximum on the rear wheels.

Folded seats + 6.5' bed would make for a massive enclosed cargo area. Good for so many things, not the least of which is camping. I really like going for a weekend and camping in my car. The CT would be amazing for this with folded rear seats.

At first I thought it was a pipe dream, but I kind of have a feeling Tesla may really try to make it happen.

And the motors and suspension!

Yes, of course, thatā€™s a huge part of the fun of it I imagine ?
