I see a lot of furrowed brows and wringing of hands on this forum over whether or not it makes sense to take TSLA up on their Foundation Series offer. Isn't it so much more logical to wait a couple more years for better battery performance, functioning FSD, bugs to be worked out? Or, better yet, switch up our CT reservations to a new M3 or MY with all the price cuts and rebates.

I understand completely. The CT is a hard choice when attempting to insert logic into the equation. For me it is simpler than that: When I'm 80 my grandkids will stumble upon a picture of me standing next to my Cybertruck in 2024....

"You had one of those, Pop?! What was it like?"

Kind of like me seeing a picture of my Pop standing next to his new Corvette split-window coupe in 1963 - a car that people couldn't believe existed even when they saw it with their own eyes. Many of that car's shortcomings were fixed in future versions of the C2 Corvette.

But...there was only one moment in history people got to drive a new 1963 corvette down the street. And feel that feeling.

My grandpop could have shown me a picture of himself standing next to his new '63 Malibu (a very cool car, btw) and told me how much more logical a choice it was.

"That's cool, Pop. Can you pass the green beans?"

There's only one moment in history any of us will get to drive a new 2024 Cybertruck down the street. And feel that feeling.

If I were in my early sixty’s or younger I’d wait a couple yrs The batteries and truck will be better and cheaper. I’m in my 70s so I need it NOW.

Tesla should let us old timers buy our trucks :) The young people have more options in waiting: better price, IRA rebates, better range, better charging, all issues fixed, FSD, larger rear wheel angles, …

I hear you my friend. I'm looking for options to drag my feet, because my logic clearly says NO to FS, but a voice in my head also says that the logic applies for several things in life - just wait for two more years, you might get something better - cars, cool toys, house, spouse :LOL:.

I know what's going to happen when that VIN gets assigned. I'm a man, and men do stupid things. We defy logic! We make stupid decisions, and then we get wise.

It's about time to defy logic and get wise! :p

Why not just buy Foundation Series now and then trade it in for a 2028 model with the bigger better batteries and whatnot?

I thought I'd have lots of time to think, but just got my email this evening so now its become much more real.
Initially I was leaning to waiting, but now I'm starting think about the logic of getting the home power sharing that's part of foundation. For the day or two a year, having the truck power the house would be really helpful and a lot less costly than adding powerwalls.
Plus I get the truck, but there are so many potential issues with getting one of these first ones before more problems are sorted out.
Decisions decisions

Waiting to buy a fully matured car from Tesla means waiting for N+1 years…the end will never come.

If I waited the five years from 2018 to 2023 to purchase a “better” Tesla, I would have missed out on enjoyable times in the moment.

It is pure folly to think Tesla will stop improving. Look to the upcoming project Juniper Model Y as one example. Improvements in CyberCell chemistry as another example. Model S/X improvements during 2021, 2022, and 2023. Cybertruck is no different.

Buying any vehicle is a mix of a practical and emotional decision. Maybe more so emotional buying a technology car, like Tesla, Lucid, Rivian, and to an extent, Ford BEVs as well.

My 9/2023 Model Y is a significant improvement over my 10/2018 Model 3.:

* Lower cost
* Cast single piece rear versus 70+ pieces Model 3
* Lithium low voltage battery versus lead-acid
* Laminated glass
* Pedestrian warning low speed sounds
* Improved LED headlights
* Lower cabin noise
* Improved ride comfort
* Hatchback more versatile form
* Powered rear opening
* Improved interior (center console design)
* Improved HW4 cameras
* HEAT PUMP
* Heated stearing wheel
* CCS protocol enabled

this forum’s most surprising aspect, to me, is the number of folks over 70

id 100% support Tesla prioritizing by age

for what it’s worth, both will tend to be a lot more expensive than a 26kW generac - especially for the few days a year that appear to be your hole needing filled

separately, it appears that folks may be buying the CT before discovering their home isn’t “qualifying” for the system somehow - this aspect isn’t clear to be but I haven’t had reason to explore it in detail. Sounds like you might should.

not trying to dissuade you, just adding to your metaphorical white board of considerations to be diligenced

For sure. My Model 3 is an April/May 2018, so I'm fully there with not waiting.
But because of my Model 3 experience I've seen where those "premium" features end up being standard. "Premium" seating or "premium" all glass roof anyone? So paying an extra $20k to get so called premium features is actually a negative for me.
The 2018 Model 3 is/was a great car and didn't have significant issues, unlike the current CT which seems to still have unresolved issues like charging speed, range, leaky tonneau, no AP/FSD etc etc
That last one is a real kicker - $12k for FSD but not get even the basics delivered. I've already prepaid for FSD once so not keen on doing it again, especially when EM says it isn't a priority.

I do not know how many of us are in that age range but it isn’t surprising to me. I haven’t put much thought into it. I do know that age has a lot to do with my desire to end the wait and be willing to get an FS.
