They deployed 8 CTs.

The bigger contribution is the Megapacks and MPUs.

Southern California has lost all communications and Starlink has saved the day.
A city has lost some communications, not Southern California, which encompasses ten of millions of other people not impacted by the fires.

The fires were big, but Los Angeles is bigger. Let alone half the state!

It's much better when he's putting rubber to the road (or metal to the stars).

I still it amazing, that this city has lost communications and Starlink is supplying all their communications. I thought everything was burned, maybe residents are sleeping in tents and have already purchased new laptops and desktops

It is amazing, but the state and utilities and CalFire already have satellite trucks, generators, and microwave beacons to supplement their systems when impacted by fire. While I didn't need outlets, or wifi, we had them at the evacuation site.

The utilities have little bunkers all over the state with generators and trucks with generator trailers they roll out. Several of the hilltop sites are specifically camped out by CalFire crews so they don't burn - although in the CZU Fire we still lost several of them.

But batteries are far quieter, and the wifi he's offering allows the crews and locals general access to the internet.

And that's a great comfort they wouldn't otherwise have. Every little bit helps.

'Until' usually means they expect them back, and hence, not a write-off. Depending upon the miles put on them, they might not even stop being new stock.

To donate is to give a gift. Here it could be give Cybertrucks or give a service (temporary use of Cybertrucks). Again the recipient gives a receipt (ie 12 Cybertrucks for 28 days). Tesla could then present that to the IRS with fair market value of the service (Cybertrucks generally rent for $300-$400 dollars a day currently). Again this is the mechanism with charitible donations. However as pointed out all this is probable moot as Tesla likely won't have paid taxes to the IRS by the end of this year. Tesla clearly isn't doing this for a tax write off but maybe the info will encourage those of you unfamiliar with charitable giving.

I'm unaware of any such method for writing off vehicles you took to a disaster.

Could you point me to one?

-Crissa
Here we go again 🤣

Indeed. I can show you the method...

Its explained clearly in publication 526 of the IRS for charitable contributions.

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p526.pdf

Tesla can deduct the car expenses of their use. (See P.5-6.). This includes mileage, electricity, etc.

Also, if Tesla, after this is all over, decides to donate the vehicles (and I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they do), they can write off the FMV of those vehicles, and likely the Starlink dishes. Thats a big nut.

For inventory that was previously held for sale for customers, see P. 11.

They can do this by supplying IRS form 8283, section B:

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8283.pdf

Finally, these contributions apply to giving to "qualified organizations". This does not even have to be 501C(3). See P2-3 of 526:

The United States or any state, the District of Columbia, a U.S. possession (including Puerto Rico), a political subdivision of a state or U.S. possession, or an Indian tribal government or any of its subdivisions that perform substantial government functions.
That means Cal Fire, and likely many of the other organizations fighting that fire.

Also, without looking, I am willing to bet California has a heck of a tax incentive for charitable giving under these conditions.
