Do you know what FLIR stand for? Forward Looking Infrared Radar (FLIR). In the 80's I used to fix the FLIR equipment on the CP-140 aircrafts in Comox, BC Canada. Lockheed CP-140 Aurora - Wikipedia

In the lab, I would put my hand on a chair and see my hand print for a long time after it. The sensors inside the FLIR unit, which was mounted in the nose of the CP-140 aircraft were cool to some low kelvin degrees ( Kelvin - Wikipedia ) to increase their sensitivity to the environment to track traces of submarines in the water from the air. The numbers were classified.

I remember riding them (civilian version) from San Diego to San Francisco for $14.
