It is a combination of things. First, as mentioned above Teslas store object permanence in some scenarios but this can be augmented with the following:

Your neighbor's Ring or other doorbell camera that faces your house.

Starlink satellites passing overhead

The cell phone camera from the doordash or Uber driver driving down your street.

Images taken by Amazon delivery drivers and stored and indexed for your location.

Undocumented camera capabilities in other parts of the spectrum like x-rays and gamma rays.

These and potentially other sources are harnessed in real time to give a highly detailed view of your surroundings which is then made to look a little fuzzy so as not to freak owners out...

BUT all that requires interconnect services b/w companies (Amazon, tesla, Apple, Ring, Android OEM, etc.).

I am new toTesla but i don’t think that Tesla connects with anyone else. Starlink is only for overhead. Can’t see into houses.

???? my post was tongue in cheek and not meant to be taken seriously although it was an exploration of the art of the possible I guess...

I’ve never seen this addressed anywhere, but why assume that Tesla cameras only see visible light? Maybe this is how they see so well in the rain.

It has been addressed here in the past by some of our more technically astute members.

From the drive through lane at In n Out, my CT could see workers on the other side of an interior wall. I thought I was hallucinating at first, but it did seem to track them moving about. Not seen 100% of the time, but enough for me to remember thinking ā€œthat’s crazy!ā€

Might be that the B pillar camera could see around the edge of the wall.

Personally, I'm still a bit disappointed that Tesla went away from putting the radar in the front bumper. I had an S85D that had the radar and it was rock solid (and could even "see" a few cars ahead when on a straight away in close traffic). I understand the desire to reduce costs, but in inclement weather, I still trust radar more than a camera.

I had front radar and ultrasonic parking sensors on my 2021 S Plaid, probably should have kept that sensor-rich car. USS were far more accurate at gauging tight parking spaces than the vision-based parking system (which has gotten much better BTW). I recall I had three different service visits with the S and each time they wanted to disconnect the front radar - even though they had already done so. I'd also prefer to have front radar, and ultrasonic sensors, back in the mix as with my tight garage tolerances there is zero chance my CT will ever be able to self-park.

Have you ever pointed a thermal camera at a cybertruck? The thing is essentially transparent.
