Jason Hughes (a well-known Tesla hacker and owner of 057 Technology) posted on Twitter that he believes the video was faked. He references the charge curves seen in the car's energy screen as suspicious. It remains to be seen, but a possible future video by Warped Perception with more details on the electrical and communications side could disprove that theory.
He just seems to be click-bait sour grapes.

Yeah, it's annoying the guy didn't show us his charging setup, but that's literally a black box solution you can buy off aliexpress.

Maybe he did fake it. I really don't care, it was stupid and I don't have time for negative nellies or stupid stans. Why would anyone?

But a diesel generator would get better than 19MPG (His figure not mine). So the 25% more for the fuel is made back in extra MPG. Also the generator he chose charges 38 miles of range per hour so 2 gallons per hour. For his tank, that meant 3-4 fills on the 500 mile trip. That's costing similar time and effort to an electric top up at a super charger, for more money. $4.5 / gallon.

The 500 mile trip cost him $112.5 compared to using Superchargers at $20 peak times.
Using Superchargers he would have saved $90 that he could keep in his pocket or have spent on activities in the 40 minutes it takes at a level 3 super charger.

------------------------------

How much time total did he spend making 3-4 stops to refill his little gas tank?

He ran that extremely noisy engine all night just to charge the battery!!
He ran that extremely noisy engine all night just to generate views!!

There I fixed it for you

What I did not get is him complaining about not wanting to stop, but then stopping lots of times (several destinations, hotels, friends house, etc) that he could have charged the vehicle and never had an issue.

Fake or not, I do not care, because I agree with @Crissa, it is dumb and I can spend my mental energy on something else.

That looks like a terrible place to put a fuel tank.

-Crissa
That's the entire 2 cylinder engine with generator in the frunk. It's tiny and light.
The fuel tank is in the back, they've removed 2/3 of the battery for the demo unit, the point being that a dedicated platform would use less batteries which would reduce the overall EV cost.
The article is worth a read I linked to.

Oh, it's an even more terrible idea. Studies show that users split into two types: The ones who don't use the range extender enough and it gums up; and those who use the extender to recharge the battery.

So, reduce the battery capacity to add a range extender?

Take a useful cargo space and replace it with a large lump of metal that when there is a front end collision, does what? Have they put a modified Model 3 thru all the crash tests again?

Still read the article. Its just a tiny two cylinder direct drive APU the size of a briefcase, with virtually no moving parts. The idea is to reduce the cost of EV by having less batteries in areas where there is not enough charging grid, like Africa, India, S. America and here, and use biofuels that can be grown locally from food waste.

If you have to add a charging grid and network, those places won't see EV adoption for decades, because even the houses aren't connected to power yet. In fact a little generator like that in a EV with V2X could run a whole village. They literally have booths just to charge their mobiles:

Not all places have power, or the money to pay for it. Cars are common though, as everyone shares them. You can essentially hitch a ride with any car that drives past in these areas, by waving the driver down and handing them some cash (or sending them some mobile credit as payment). Either way it's a long way to any form of grid powered charger, and this both lowers the entry price and increases range to make it between charge points.

I just want to say I enjoy reading everyone’s comments. I love the lack of explaination for some that nay say an idea ?.

im just happy another YouTuber shook the world with more creativity and possibilities regardless if it’s fake. Just takes me back to the old spy movies, Back to the Future tech, and Blade Runner. We never would have imagined ACTUAL tech back then and look where we are now.

I’m waiting for someone to max out the solar capacity of what’s capable and possible right now for solar just to show the world “this is possible but we need just a little more tech innovation.”

I still like the solar trailer idea or the guy that built an additional battery under his teardrop for more range. We need more people like that. Why can’t the half of you that poop on an idea just…. Think of a way to improve on it instead of saying it’s not possible. The world would be a better place.

sorry…. Was about to turn into a full blown rant. I get passionate about innovation. Parent told me “that’s not possible” a lot as a kid ??….. ?

Just because something is possible doesn't make it a good idea.

I'm glad there are people experimenting. But I'd druther they taken us along their design and implementation than seek clickbait. This one was more the latter than the former.

There are plenty of hybrids out there to buy without hacking apart a perfectly good Tesla.

There have been many people in our crowd that have proposed adding a generator to their CT to extend the range. Here is a video of someone who did the same thing for a MS.

?Regenerative braking in motion while using a external generator will overload the system?

The Flintstones would have hated the idea of a structural battery pack.
