I think it's weird that we give out drivers' licenses at 16, but expect that on your 21st birthday you will instantly recognize when you've had too much to drink.

There is SOME science behind the 21 age decision. I used to think it was someone arbitrary, but I happen to be married to a real low IQ moron. Actually, she is an Educational Neuro-Psychologist. She explained brain growth and development in young adults, and how that impacts judgement. And so, while it isn’t a “today you don’t understand, and tomorrow you will” kind of switch, and some aren’t ready at 21 and others are at 19, you have to shoot for the bulk of the bell curve. And if you choose to use age, then today you are 20 and tomorrow you are 21. And hopefully you will learn sometime between 16 and 20 the dangers of drinking and driving and make some choices to use ”tomorrow” and after.

It's less about age and more about experience. Until you've been drunk more than a few times, it's difficult to self-assess.

These replies have merit, but the real reason for the drinking age being 21 is because some of us were around when the drinking age was 18 and totally ruined it for everyone that came afterwards...
