For everyone waiting in the Northeast (and other areas) for their Cybertruck delivery, my suggestion is don't pay any money in your Tesla app until after it's confirmed your vehicle is sitting in the local Tesla Service Center parking lot.

Due to the current massive delays with rail yards in Texas (and other areas), paying in advance could result in you having to make car payments on a vehicle loan that has not been delivered. All VIN's are assigned when trucks are loaded onto rail cars, so if your vehicle is stuck in Texas and not moving, it could take 4-8 weeks, or longer, before it gets delivered to your local Tesla service center.

I've been told directly by Tesla that "hundreds of Tesla vehicles" bound for the Northeast cannot move through the rail system because other car manufacturer vehicles are not selling, and their vehicles are being stored in railroad cars ahead of Tesla vehicles, thus causing our trucks (and all other Tesla vehicles) to sit idle in railroad cars. You'll just have to wait until the truck arrives at your local Tesla service center.

I didn't submit the down payment until I was able to check out the truck at the delivery center. It will not delay the delivery day. I submitted the down payment and then continued with the next steps in the app. Had access to the Cybertruck in about 30 seconds inside the app. I was not willing to give them a bucket of money until I was able to examine the truck they had for me.

It is a shame that Tesla can't figure out a way to offer a "pick it up at the factory option". Problem solved.

Combine the factory pickup with a factory tour and a refund of the shipping costs and I would do it in a heartbeat. No brainer!!

So, how about it, TESLA??

I'm really dubious of this statement.

Why wouldn't all rail traffic get delayed?

It may make a little more sense if the vehicles were coming from Michigan with the others, but Teslas come from CA and TX.

And most importantly, the railroad isn't a storage facility of the dealers. I'm pretty sure they really don't have to option to "park" a rail car to wait for better sales.

I completely agree with you, doesn’t sound like a real story, and that's why at this point I think the local SC doesn’t have a clue what's going on.

When I told them I wanted to fly to Texas to go see my truck in person at the rail yard to verify the VIN number(and verify their story is true) I got a call the next day from the SC sales manager who told me the above story.

Of course I’m the idiot who paid for the car only because they told me on a Thursday it was arriving to the SC the following Tuesday. Now it’s been four weeks and still no truck.

So, whoever happens to read this message do not arrange to pay for your vehicle until your actual delivery day.

They give you a VIN once your truck is in or slated for production. You only have to pay the order fee (for the CT, this is on top of the reservation fee). You don’t have to buy the vehicle but you forgo the order fee if you refuse it and don’t put a hold on it.

Roger that...it would make a great day trip for us from the Houston area. You can pick up your Corvette at the factory in Bowling Green, KY...why not Tesla. It would save a mountain of red tape and unneeded costs.

You can't even get a tour of the place.

To pickup a vehicle, they'd have to build a delivery center. But more importantly there's all sorts of tax and legal issues. Dealers have done a great job to keep people from going out f their territory to buy at a cheaper price.

In a drawn-out nutshell, it is just a SHAME that:
  • The most innovative automaker in the world allows GM to outshine them on delivery options for premium vehicles.
  • Honest, hardworking individuals put down an earnest money reservation for a vehicle only to discover four and a half years later that it has doubled in price with a $20K involuntary add-on expense included to be a Beta tester.
  • The top-of-the-line, high-priced premium vehicle is swept under the rug, requiring high-ticket buyers to bite their lips and continue to wait while lower-end products are delivered to those who reserved later.
  • Once ordered/configured, there is no clear line of communication as to when an actual delivery will occur.
  • The rules change, and order holders are not sure what will be truly delivered when that mystery date finally arrives.
  • Future Cyberbeast owners are spending copious amounts of cash on adult beverages to calm their jittery nerves and sagging expectations as to when the wait will stop.
  • Spouses of future owners are threatening their significant others with death if they hit that app button just one more time and gasp when no change is evident.
Overall... it is just a shame. "Honey, I promise that I do not have the Tesla app on my phone. NOT!!!"

It would be a shame if it were true.

1) The Cybertruck is not Tesla's premium vehicle. That's the Model S and Model X
2) What, $150 fully refundable. Get real, that's not really earnest money. The vehicle indeed went up in price, just like everything else. The Foundation Series option is completely voluntary. It's the equivalent of like a King Ranch edition. (except that the King Ranch doesn't include everything)
3) Again, not the top of the line Tesla.
4) There is a perfectly clear line of communications. You just don't believe it.
Tesla: You will be informed when your car is available
You: Where's my car? Where's my car
Tesla: A VIN has been assigned start the buying process and we will notify you when it is time to pickup your vehicle.
Tesla: Your vehicle is available.
5) Rules really haven't changed. They are currently in a ramp-up position and are adding additional features as they feel the can handle it.
6) Not Tesla's problem or responsibility
7) If you keep hitting the wall with your head and it hurts, stop. If the vehicle is not available, it's not available.

The Tesla app is not clear as to when payment is required. However, the instructions are very clear, stating that we must complete all steps to avoid delivery delays. on the payment tab, it. should state “There is no need to pay any money to Tesla until your delivery day.”

For my situation, it was my local Tesla service center that screwed up and told me my delivery was happening in 4 calendar days (and was shown in my app), so I paid the down payment and had my bank wire transfer the money to Tesla the next day to avoid delays.

Then I was told the DAY BEFORE THE SCHEDULED DELIVERY that the truck was still sitting inside a railroad car somewhere in Texas. Just horrible customer service, and they have no clue as to when it’s leaving Texas.

If I request a refund of monies paid, then it complicates matters when the truck does finally arrive in 2 to 6 weeks from now (assuming no additional delays)

Tesla should offer a premium delivery service for an additional fee for those people who don’t want to wait several weeks waiting on trains and just have it driven over the road directly to the service center.

I understand it’s just a truck and I need to have patience however that’s a lot of money to shell out, especially when the expectation was that the delivery should’ve taken place three weeks ago. that’s enough ranting for now. Sorry for the “War and Peace novel, just trying to alert others not to pay in advance.
