Anyone having problems with the auto dimming function of their headlights?

I like the auto dim feature and have used it in other vehicles for years with no problems. This is not new technology. However, in the CT I have a difficult time getting the brights (high beams) to engage or to remain engaged when set manually, even with no opposing traffic is visible.

I drive a secondary county road on the way home, it is very narrow, winding and hilly. Deer are everywhere. It is nice to have the high beams on, but the truck keeps reverting to low beams with no other traffic in sight. I am not sure if it is the reflection from road signs, red driveway markers, house windows, the double yellow line, or even trees over hanging the roadway but it seems way too sensitive, as almost anything will cause the headlights it to revert to the low settings. Yesterday I had it revert to dim for a guy sitting in his driveway with headlights on. The headlights could NOT be directly seen from the CT, his headlights were simply illuminating the street in front of his drive much like a streetlight. Even in my own driveway (yes, it is that long) it will not auto change to brights. Very frustrating and somewhat dangerous.

Anyone else experience this? Any advice? Would a headlight calibration help?

My experience - it’s no worse than and certainly not better than any of the other Teslas I have owned. The auto high beam function seems to work pretty well on the highway, where there’s little extraneous ambient light except cars in front of you and cars coming towards you on the other lanes. In other words, a simpler rule set to follow.

However, I agree, around town and on back roads, it’s pretty miserable and tends to err towards the low beam setting way too often - porch lights, sign reflections, and lots of times I can’t tell what it’s looking at that triggers low beams. We have lots of deer in central Pennsylvania as well, and I have basically turned off the auto high beam setting and use manual for around town.

I don’t think you have a problem with your vehicle, I think we all do! This is one area where AI may be able to do better.

oh and, the high beams are worse than our model S in terms of penetration distance/brightness (which aren’t great either). Maybe pixel level adaptive headlights will come out at some point and help improve this.

in the meantime, having a blast driving this thing,… Especially during the daytime! ?

Mine seem to work fine except when cars are coming up on a curve; at that point they are somewhat delayed.

I'm fairly certain that NHTSA regulations require speeds above 25mph before high beams can be automatically activated.

annoyances/bugs with auto-dim are going to be around for a little while longer, I think. We tend to have a bias on how hard it is for a machine to comprehend when to dim and when not to since the resolution of our eyes are much, much higher. And it's tough nut to crack as far as Ai is concerned.

I get dimming from road sign reflection all the time, and flood lights that seem to align in a curvy road to make it seem as if it was an oncoming car.

Also, I adjusted my headlights down 4 scroll wheel clicks during a calibration since they seemed to bounce too much into other drivers' line of sight and mirrors too often. I wish these headlights came with a gimbal system that could really lock it into the perfect plane. Or maybe the headlamps have that function with active matrix LEDs but just isn't approved yet. ?‍♂
