Most of the factory 3-person 40/20/40 front bench seats I see in modern pickups are not like the straight back front bench seats (single slab for all 3 people) in 1950s-1990s generations of pickups.

but the question then is are the Toyota and Nissan versions more a consequence of those trucks internal envelope, vs the Ford’s envelope - and which is closer

Lap belt. The car had gone off the road and off a 30' drop and struck a boulder in a creek. The force was huge and terrible.
Having someone behind you in a seat belt is not a good idea, especially if the person in front is smaller.

Just be careful about the length of screws when installing your aftermarket center seat.
