Totally unnecessary but totally worth it, I bought the Igloo 80DZ Electric Cooler from Costco. Uses very little power and keeps food cold and colder with dual zone temps. Highly recommend. Uses .2Kw and goes down to 0° on one side for popsicles and ice cream after a long day hike!

Why would people pay so much money for a freezer? I have bought mine on Amazon and used it in my Model X and my CT as well:

(interestingly the 64 qt dual zone is even cheaper)

(Update: yeah, I know it is smaller, but you can get a 80qt on Amazon for ~$500 as well)

Brilliant. Did you buy online or at a warehouse? I want one and want to see dimensions and cost.

Because not all things that are expensive are the same as the cheap version.
Because some of us aren't just weekend warriors for camping, and use things for 6 months a year non stop.

I won't go too far, but my 100qt single zones are about $1300 each now. I got mine for a grand each. They are top notch, and maybe a bit better than the local Bodega ^
I do different things than most. Very adventurous. YTD already 83 days sleeping outside.

Personally I like single zones if they are good. -7F Makes so much ice. We use the ice for rafting and keeping the beverages cold in the 2007 Yeti that one sit's on in a raft. I mention the year, because it is old, and it works.

Being in rafting and water sports for years. I have lifted my share of coolers of all brands. Handles break, hinges go bust. Just never experienced it on anything I owned. Must be lucky.

There are two main types of technology for automotive refrigerators:
  • Compressor refrigerators: These work similarly to your home refrigerator.
  • Thermoelectric coolers (TEC coolers): These use the Peltier effect to create a temperature difference.

Thanks for this summary.

I think Cyberlandr (if it ever happens and isn’t vaporware) uses a thermoelectric cooler. Good to understand the limitations of that tech.

Not true - according to their site the fridge will be a compressor design:

Thanks for the correction there! I do hope the Cyberlandr sees the light of day but I doubt it will at this point.

@Outdoors

Do you mind sharing which brand of electric cooler you went with? Also, what kind of raft do you have? We’ve gone on a few guided rafting trips, but considering getting our own raft.

My local Costco has a floor model Igloo 80DZ reduced to $650. Looked like some sort of liquid spilled in both compartments, wonder if they would have used a returned product for a floor model.

The 80DZ has had mixed reviews with bad seals reported on some and compressor issues for others.
