Key cards no longer unlock truck

Just had a 2 day service visit. Results were disappointing. Finally received my wheel covers but they did not install because i had the snow tire package installed and apparently the covers don't work with those. Main issue was the Key cards. Service advisor was unaware of this being a problem with others. I told him there's dozens of people speaking of this online. Results of the service visit are below:
Concern: Customer states: Cameras & Sensors - Drivers side pillar no longer reads either key
card. I can add or remove cards in phone charger so must be pillar sensor issue.
Repair Notes: Diagnosed concern, did find that there is a recognized issue currently where the
keycards do work to start vehicle from the center console but are not functioning on the b pillar.
Inspected components, wiring and connections. tested replacement b-pillar, same issue apparent.
No fix available at this time.

Keep all us posted if you hear anything. Unbelievable he hasn’t heard of the problem.

Love the truck, but this has been pretty disappointing. I might just park it for the time being. Scared to get somewhere and my phone not connect for whatever reason, leaving me stranded

Definitely disappointing, given that I bet Tesla is aware of this by now. But just have a second phone person, wife, son or good friend you add as managed driver. Then they can always unlock and start it remotely.

My appointment is this Thursday. I asked in the messages if they anticipated needing to keep my truck overnight and they said they would partially because my drop off isn’t until the afternoon.

I also mentioned, how many folks are reporting SCs not finding a fix for this, and asked if they still wanted me to bring in, and they confirmed they do want to diagnose it themselves.


Hard for me to feel like Tesla isn’t blatantly waisting my time right now with having me come in for the appointment, and then likely leave my truck overnight all while knowing there’s no fix for this.

Definitely wasting your time. Let us know what they say.

I dropped my truck off to the Las Vegas dealer on Monday the 27th for my key cards not working. They had it for 1hr said it was finished but the key cards still don’t work and they stated that they didn’t know how to fix it. Honestly this is a huge security risk in my opinion. My wife will not drive it in fear that she will be locked out.

My partner got a new Model X last spring and we had never used the key cards. I got the new metal CT keycard and programmed it to work both vehicles and lo and behold, discovered that none of our key cards will unlock the X but will start it fine — basically the typical CT story. But my CT will unlock with it. Weird!

After reading all these problems with the B-Pillar reader, I needed to set up a tesla ring for my CT & wife's MY. Same result as others here. Everything works on MY. but none of our keycards nor the tesla ring work on the CT.

Sounds like no good reason to schedule a service appointment until we start hearing about a fix...

It's likely that a replacement of the RFID module fixes it because the module has been corrupted through an improperly performed firmware upgrade.

Tesla will obfuscate and delay replacing people's hardware if they think they can eventually fix this with a future software update.... as it would save them many millions of dollars.

There's liability for them too... someone could get stranded in a difficult location with a broken phone and be unable to either unlock the vehicle or call for help. Very bad optics for Tesla.

Agree bad optics. I’m probably going to be a bit of a Karen tomorrow I’ve decided. They want to play games and make me come in? Make me wonder if they’ll give me a loaner or if I’ll have to beg for uber credits? I’m primed, and will give them a chance to be straight with me. In person humans are pretty reasonable IME at SCs…. And if I’m being honest in my 5 years of Tesla ownership I’ve never needed my key card so my logic might prevent me from full blown top popping haha but I’ll let you guys know what’s what.

Just to confirm, you have maintained ability, not gained it back after loosing correct?
