I was asking service center about covers scratching rims and was told that they are not aware of such issues :-/. I’m driving around with hub inserts from Amazon. The cover hooks seem to be made of plastic, so it is a bit surprising that coating is so easy to damage with plastic.

I know, and I just went 4 wheeling and not a scratch on the rims.

I recently had 2 flats and took the truck to Tesla Service, where I took the core wheel covers off for the first time in nearly 6 months. All 4 wheels are scratched..... The Tech said that happens with all wheel covers.

I took the truck back to a different SC and mentioned the scratches again. They said the same thing: the plastic that keeps the covers tight to the wheel also happens to scratch the wheels. He said they've tried using felt and rubber as buffers but without success.

So, the bottom line is. Either pay to fix the scratches and never put on covers again, or if you like the covers, then don't worry about scratched wheels.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I like the look of the Core Wheel covers. With the amount of driving I do, I'll take the extra efficiency I get with the covers.

I'm with you on the Core Wheels. At first, I thought I'd take them off but once I got the truck, I actually liked them and have kept them on.

I liked them before I recieved my CB, and I never had any intention on taking them off (unless one needed replaced at the whopping cost of $75 (very reasonable)).

No offense intended here, BUT; I don't relate to some other people's preference to go without the covers, or better yet, replace the entire wheel with something after market.

It's like they are like "I'm all down with this futuristic, unique, design of the Cybertruck, the most sophisticted and technologically advanced vehicle on the road...but the wheels?, naw man, I can't get modern and futuristic with the wheels, I gotta stay old-school with them, and put something on just like every other car or truck out there...can't get too modern and efficient with my wheels, yo...that's where I draw the line..."

Like, what?

But oh well, I'll keep doing me and everyone else keep doing you...

For me [going without covers] is cause in my mind: hub cap = cheap. Reason is base model cars have commonly come with steel wheels and hubcaps. Not talking about partial caps like Model 3 Sport rims or Performance rims; I’m talking about hubcaps that cover the whole rim. Optional wheels, or higher level trims, typically come with alloys and no hub caps. So for me, I yanked the core wheel covers off pretty early and don’t have any obvious scratches on the rims.

More specifically to Core wheels, I don’t think they’re all that good looking or futuristic either. They still have a round overall shape. However, I do like the look of non-Core Cybertruck wheel covers cause those are truly more futuristic since they don’t have a round shape. Still would prefer if they were part of the wheel rather than a hub cap though.

Funny you mention this bc this is how I've always felt (I've never owned a vehicle with hub caps...until the Cybertruck lol), and why I've always chosen the upgraded wheels (most recently, the induction wheels when I bought the 2020 Y). Point being, I totally get what you're saying :)

I actually want to use the wheel covers but I don't want the rim to get scratched.

OK, let me challenge you with the very deep question of....Why?
  1. The covers were designed for efficiency. I heard somewhere like an 8% savings in electricity useage per mile.
  2. The covers look cool as-hell and in-theme with the figgin rest of the Cyber Truck.
  3. They aren't your old-school chrome hubcaps from the 1950's and '60's. These are Blade-Runner quality wheel covers. (That you can replace for $75 each).
  4. If your stock wheels scratch, who cares? Because we are rocking covers on them at all times!! (Can't see the scratches anyway)
  5. If you just can't stand the futurisic, efficient, plastic wheel covers any longer, and you want them off, but have scratches on your stock wheels...again, who cares? They were stock anyway, and if you're going full-naked wheels...may as well go after-market, badass wheels at that point...

I've gone for a year now without having received the wheel covers, and I quickly installed center caps and lug covers. I've become accustomed to the look, and the aero benefits of the covers are negligible at urban speeds.

Plus I don't like scratches

Why would I be ok with scratches on a $100k truck. None of my other Teslas have the same problem.

Just because they are scratched in a place that nobody will see if you're using the covers.

These are the only covered wheels I have ever had, and I like the look. I don't even know if I have scratches, because I haven't looked, but I assume I probably have them, or will have them, but it doesn't bother me becasue I don't plan to ever ride without the covers on. If I ever get sick of the covered look, I would probably go complete aftermarket at that point.

Basically, have you ever heard the phrase "Don't let perfection to be the enemy of good?"

That is kinda how I view this. I want the covers, and how they perfectly fit the custom designed AT tires. It would be perfect if nothing got scratched underneath, but if my wheels do get scratched, I'm not going to let that detail stop me from enjoying the CT designed tires and matching covers.

2-3% efficiency at highway speeds, less through town.

So really they are mainly for looks.
