A few thoughts on the article (excerpts in bold):

“Stainless steel is typically heavier than the steel used in most other cars, reducing driving range.”
Yes. And mild steel is heavier than wood. WHY ARENT CARS MADE OF WOOD


“To me, the insistence on stainless steel is a manifestation of his belief that he has some unique understanding of the market, and that the market will buy whatever he offers because it comes from the mind of Elon Musk.”
I heard this same BS about the iPhone: "you're just a bunch of Steve Jobs cultists".


These challenges probably help explain why Tesla is two years behind schedule in manufacturing the Cybertruck, which the company plans to produce at its factory in Austin, Texas.

There would be no Tesla if they relied on "anyone else":
Elon: Electric cars for everyone! Them: Impossible.
Elon: Electric trucks and Semis! Them: Impossible.
Elon: Grid-level battery storage! Them: Impossible.
Elon: Re-use rockets by landing! Them: Impossible.

Citation? There are still ~1M reservations rite?


Stainless steel does not crumple as easily, exposing passengers to more of the force from impact.
Citation? CARS ARE TOO STRONG, MAKE THEM FROM WOOD

Changing the unit of measurement is flawed logic.

btw, pen safely retrieved and stowed securely in glove box. I know you lost sleep wondering about the outcome

edit: adding a salty humid environment, feathers take on weight. Steel sheds weight.

couldn't read the article w/o a subscription to the NYT.
I had a freebie.. but no one needs to have a subscription to know NYT is BS.

Yup, that is exactly why I did not spend any time reading the NYT article even though I had freebies still available. It was the NYT writing about something they have a known bias against.

I am not going to waste my time and I also do not want the NYT to count another visit that they can use to charge higher ad rates.

BTW Corroded steel is heavier than non-corroded steel.

There are cars made of wood, and they are typically lighter, depending on the wood used. Structurally per unit of mass the proper wood can be better than steel, depending on the geometry required.

I love how the dude writing the article is banging on about how difficult it is to stamp stainless steel, even though the Cybertruck will have no stamped stainless steel. Fantastic journalism right there. 👏 Imagine paying money to read this tripe, lol.

In 2010 it is understandable that most engineers might have thought those things would be extremely difficult but only poor engineers would say impossible.

But in late 2022 for professor of engineering Raj Rajkumar to say Tesla doesn't know what it is doing after accomplishing the extremely difficult things CyberGus listed and even Tesla competitors doing similar (several Chinese EV makers that have scaled production of full-size EVs, pickups Ford Lightning EV, Rivian R1T, Scania Semi EV, Freightliner eCascadia, Peterbilt 579 EV, Mercedes-Benz eActros, LG Energy Grid scale battery systems, NextEra Energy, Fluence-Siemens).

SpaceX Falcon_9 booster successfully landed for the first time on flight 20 in December 2015. Since then, SpaceX has successfully landed boosters over 100 times. By 2023 ( 8 years later) no competitor has come close.

This professor is a rank incompetent.

I would suggest any current students at Carnegie Mellon University taking an engineering class from professor of engineering Raj Rajkumar to transfer out of the class NOW!
If you already completed the class you should ask for your money back.
