Power share Dilemma

I bought my truck over a year ago with one of the main pluses for me being the ability to connect my truck to the Tesla Powerwall I have and be able to power share when the grid is out. Last fall I got an installer who gave me a quote and Tesla sent me the charger and the gateway panel. Well that installer never showed up and after months working with QMerit to get another installer, I recached out to an installer I saw on the Tesla web. They have been responsive but have told me after their survey that I would need a new Powerwall as the version (V2?) I have isn't supported by power share.

This really leaves me wondering what to do. Why spend the money for another power wall and what to do with the charger and gateway I have still unopened. I already have a wall charger which was installed when the power wall was installed that I use for both my vehicles.

You aren't alone in this delima; I think Tesla overestimated the time it would take to iron out the details. When things are grid tied, they become incredibly complex with a ton of red tape everywhere.

I wonder if there is a chance Tesla will hear your complaint about the long delay, and maybe cut you a deal with upgrading to v3 power walls? Do you have any outbuilding the could use your current version?

I know it's not ideal, but maybe that would get you moving along faster than waiting for a better solution.

No Powerwalls are currently supported by Powershare, but I have heard nothing differentiating any generation of them in terms of future compatability.

That said, if you already have Powershare and a Gateway, the new Gateway 3V from the bundle is not needed (or even compatible).

Hmmm.... the only equipment I have is the Gateway box & charger, and I am able to have power backup (for the house) from my Cybertruck. It works great! Very pleased.

Same here. But, the OP has a Powerwall and wants that to work with the Powershare. I can understand why. We lose power quite frequently and if I'm not at home, my family has no power. Not a big deal you say. It's only a few hours you say. Tell that to a mother and Teen girl trying to get ready for school in the morning and the power goes out... That means no water either at my house.

something they may not be aware of is it’s not supported yet. Tesla is still working on the software and his publicly stated that V2 power walls will be supported. It’s also not really the power wall. It’s the gateway. The gateway needs a way to be powered so what is shipped with the trucks that had nothing installed is a gateway that has a power line that runs to the gateway so when the truck plugs in the gateway can power up and activate the transfer switch. The older gateways will be powered by the power wall so that line shouldn’t be needed.

This is something we just need to be patient on Tesla has said the software updates to make all this work should be coming sometime in Q3 of 2025.

The Tesla website clearly says any Powerwall. It’s not limited to Powerwall 3. So, if that holds true when they release the software update this quarter, then you should be fine.

I had a few days with long power outages, on one of those days I had to leave the house and take my wife's car so that the truck could continue to give them power. Later in the day she needed to leave and left the house without power. In these situations it would be nice to have a powerwall as well so that quick trips out of the house wouldn't leave it without power. I think, however, in my situation, a used Model 3 for when the power is out would be cheaper.

Man, been waiting since last Summer on this software. We are all tired of waiting so yeah sucks.
