I'm getting the vibe that this accessory is designed to be installed once and stay in. Removable would of course be more useful, despite the PITA, but my money's on put it in once and done.

Kind of a cheat mode to keep the price under the tax credit cap, but it's a logical way to go about it.
The possibilities of the range extender is the only good news today. I am really interested in the interface. I have a hoist in my garage that could easily remove it. Can we plug in a big solar array to the input? Can we have a big harness to a trailer with a battery pack? I see this evolving overtime where you are stuck with the onboard battery.

Thousands of battery installations tells me this is time consuming process and based on the image also eliminates carrying a spare.
Nio can change out an entire battery pack in a couple minutes. Automated vending machine. I see possibilities of an automated station for Tesla as well. I could see Tesla having these in mountain pass areas. Maybe they could drop into a boat or RV? Lots of possibilities.

Ouch...

Was super pumped during the delivery event, and this range extender detail is a huge disappointment.

I was excited when I read range extender/possibility of 470mi range on the specs page...but at a loss of almost half of the bed, along with $16k in additional cost really loses total interest for me.

Really was hoping standard range for the higher tier models was closer to original numbers without the other sacrifices.
The base range will increase incrementally over time as battery density improves. A single pack design is a good idea.

It'd be nice if the "range extender" was usable as a PowerWall when it isn't in your truck.
that was my exact thought!
or if you can rent it for long trips.
I would prefer option 1 - PowerWall most of the time then load it as needed as extended battery

Since the unveiling 4 years ago, I've continually said that battery technology and associated cost was going to delay the Cybertruck being sold to the 2nd half of 2023. I was obviously way too over optimistic. I wished Tesla had just delayed another 2 years and started selling the Cybertruck when specs could be closer to the original announcement.
Honestly the Cybertruck probable won't be ready for prime time until solid state batteries are available. I expect FSD will also actually be full self driving by then as well.
Is it too late to jump ship and get a Ford Lightening? Ford dealers probable will see increased demand and gouge buyers even more.

Tesla was planning on double stacking and probably more battery improvements. I am fine with 340 miles and the extender pack solution. Just not the price. Still floored.

I am going to the Ram Charger website now. Hope someone makes a PHEV with a smaller removable ICE genset. 20 HP would be about right.

Not for continuous motion at highway speeds on flat ground, let alone climbing a hill, or towing, etc.

Volt has an ICE that's 4 to 5 times that power, and it can barely pull the car up a 5% grade with an empty battery. And the Volt weighs 60% of what the Cybertruck does.

200hp is a bare minimum for a truck ICE rex, in my opinion.

20 hp is about what you need to maintain highway speed on the flats. Start with a full battery and drain it down while accelerating and hill climbing. If you run out of power pull over and charge. This assumes an electric drive.

Will they Rent the range extender?
That's not a bad idea because it would make most people realize they simply don't need more range than 5 hours on the Interstate because Superchargers dot the country and they charge really fast.

Oh, wait, I almost forgot, everybody needs to tow gargantuan 5th wheelers from coast to coast, what was I thinking?
