Hey all!

My wife and I are new to EVs/Tesla. We acquired our Cybertruck about a month ago. So far we love it!

Today we took our first long-ish trip (about 350 miles total). We had some unexpected range results.

We started the trip with 100% charge. We drove to Hinckley, MN and used the supercharger to charge to about 290 miles. We then drove from Hinckley, MN to Duluth, MN. The trip to Duluth and back to Hinckley was about 155 miles. We ended up at the supercharger in Hinckley with 20 miles left. That’s about 115 miles less than expected.

We then supercharged to about 190 miles. The drive home is about 90 miles. We made it home with 50 miles left. About 50 miles less than expected.

We navigated to the supercharger each time so the battery was preconditioned. The temperature ranged from 25-33. We drove consistently about 75-80 unless in city. No blue snowflake present once we started driving each time.

Any recommendations on what we can do to get our range closer to what is expected? Are we doing anything wrong?

TIA!

Two key things to do if you don't want to see your range plummet. Don't go 80mph. Second use the precondition feature to get you started with a warmed up battery system before you head out. But mostly.. slow down a bit.

Did you use FSD? I am in the middle of a road trip myself and was gonna post results when I got back but it’s 388mi one way and my wife drive the first leg . She lost 8% ( meaning we were supposed to arrive at the SC with X amount of battery but actually arrived with Y ) with her driving style cruising between 75-90mph .

I drove the second leg and used FSD and even though it’s set to hurry and was considering going 75mph I gained 10% when we arrived at the next SC

This is my first EV and my first ever road-trip in one so I really didn’t know what to expect. It’s not bad but idk rather take one of my other vehicles just for the sake of not having to stop so frequently. Same goes for my 2020 GT500 I had, I would’ve NEVER taking a road trip with something that got that kinda mileage and that small of fuel tank. I will say though road trips with FSD is second to none

What kind of Wh/mi did you get. Like others have said, speed is key. Also winter temps will reduce range. Like others have said preheat the battery and cabin while you are charging before you start the trip. I also leave the heat on or crank it while DC fast charging. I will do 80 mph and stop an extra time. You get the fastest charge speeds at lower SoC. Aim for something 20% or lower, I am for 10-15%. On a 350+ mile trip your best overall travel time could be less stopping on extra time and all at lower SoC. Waiting for charge between 15-90% twice may cost you more time than 15-60% three times for example.

I will say the 115 miles less than expected seems extreme. I have never seen that much of a delta and I drive over the speed limit all the time.

Elevation really affects mileage on this truck. Atlanta to Hilton head (low country) was off about 20%, largely because of speed, but coming back up to north ga was off around 40%.
Tire pressure when it’s colder is about 3 pounds extra needed.
What did usage breakdown say on your truck screen?

Yes, if you live up in the northern country you will probably only get the factory range during your summer months when temps around 70/80 degrees. Outside those months, I’d expect in the 150-225 mi ranges depending on the outside weather (wind/temps).

First off, congrats and welcome to the world of EVs.

For your case, have to agree with many here, speed and temperature are likely the reason for less than expected range.

One tool in the car that is handy and can tell you what the car thinks is using the most electricity is the 'Enery App'. It shows a nice graph along with a set of categories of what is using electricity.

You can use this to help optimize your usage.

When I got my first Tesla (Model 3) in 2019 it was fun to learning all the new stuff about EVs. We are still relatively early in the era of EVs and I think both drivers and manufacturers are still figuring out how to get as efficient with the electricity, while at the same time making the driving experience good.

Thank you everyone for your responses! It looks like the consensus is to slow the heck down!

We have almost the same trip to make today (and Saturday). We'll keep the speed down and see how things pan out. I am assuming we'll lose some range due to the cold.

Thanks again!

Highway speeds above 70 in cold weather will drain the battery more.

I get new owners having this question and being concerned about it but in the end it’s nothing to worry about because Superchargers are everywhere (unless you’re driving in a super remote area).

When I got my first Tesla in 2020, I used to use ABRP to plan out long drives to make sure I knew where I would be supercharging, then I’d look in the Plugshare to make sure there were L2 chargers at or near my destination. After a 3-6 months of ownership, I realized I didn’t have to do any of that. I just take the roadtrip and we let the nav tell us where to and when to charge (sometimes I choose a different location to supercharge).

Also, don’t forget the software is just making guesses at how much state of charge is remaining. All software doesn’t truly know.

Just change it to "%" instead of 'miles'
Like a gas car, you will never get EPA range unless you drive 50mph and it's mild outside.
Just follow the route planner and don't worry about your range compared to rated range or drive 55.
