I post Cybertruck stuff on the Internet and people like it.

This only reinforces that the assembly line is being designed in Fremont

You think they have a CT pilot line? or you're talking about the batts?

The Semi packs are made in Nevada.

This is just a test line. Why ship the batteries from Kato for an experimental line when you can do it down the street? It's what they did for the Model Y. While it's making and perfecting how to make Cybertruck packs, the cells made in Austin can go straight into Model Y.

This only reinforces that the assembly line is being designed in Fremont (and like every company before them has found out, despite housing costs, engineers would rather live in California.)

Hmm. Battery assembly equipment is installed in Austin. At least some of it. The cathode plant looks about 40% complete. (no guts) Is Kato producing batteries with the improved cathodes? or are they just 4680 form factor?

Is it possible that the CT might launch with 2170s?

ooh you are starting sh&t with the California comment. :)

The big question in my mind is whether the initial Cybertrucks will use 4680s at all. Tesla has a large supply of 2170s and just a trickle of 4680s at the moment. Building a temporary line in Fremont for 2170 cells might make sense since it’s close to Nevada.

I’ve been thinking the 4680 is a requirement, but you can build a pack which is structural even if the cells are not. It is just less efficient. The current 2170 based Model Ys coming out of Austin are done this way.

If they did 2170 Cybertrucks, I’d expect they would be shorter range, maybe 300 miles, rather than trying to do a huge pack with 2170s.

I don't think the battery pack is that complicated (all things considering). Wouldn't it be cheaper to ship the cells? IDK if they are transporting battery packs they will be weight limited before space limited on trucks.

Will they transport by rail?

This is why I think this first pack will be different from the Texas packs.
I think you’d reduce handling by bundling the cells into the finished package before shipping.

Battery cells are dangerous in large numbers. Putting them in a finished package and shipping them that way is about the most stable way to ship them. Just prevents extra handling steps.

We know Tesla has a developmental 4680 line in Freemont to get the line construction figured out. That was all part of the 30% of the footprint, 30% faster, etc... that they talked about on battery day way back when. Most likely, Tesla will take 4680s from Freemont to Austin to get the pack-building line set up while they are finishing up the 4680 production line going (and the cathode plant!). We already know they are shipping in a bunch of the parts for the Model Ys from Freemont in order to produce at Austin. Eventually, they'll get all the plastics, rubber, and sub-asssembly lines set up and fed and THEN, we'll see vehicles that are completely made in Austin and not just assembled there. Well, they will still import cameras and chips and radios and speakers and...

well, Dec 2023 is looking like it may be pushed out again......still no giga press despite the rumors 3 weeks ago of it being in Houston, batteries are a question and although Y's are shipping from Giga Texas, how many of those have 4680's.....IMHO, we are still a good "moon shot" away from seeing CT's in any configuration........I personally, at 46k on the reservation list, will not accept a CT with 2170's knowing a few months later the 4680s will be available......there just seems to be a lot of speculation on all fronts to get any type of good feeling......even watching the cathode construction, which seems to be going well, they have to finish it in order to accept the contractual obligation from their supplier for the material to make product......sorry if I sound pessimistic.......

It's not a moon shot anymore. It's a step behind Artemis, but it's no longer a risky thing. It will happen.

-Crissa
Wait a minute… Artemis is pinned to SLS. It’s billions over budget, 5+ years behind schedule, and failed to launch. Not a great compare!!!

Well if the Semi can really get 500miles fully ladden, then I think the Cybertruck range is safe bet between 350 and 500. Just my opinion. :)
CT2 with 350+ real range is what I would like. For towers I can see wanting that 500mile one.

Tooling..... yipeee!

if they are working on tooling, how long will we wait to see the design on paper?.......sketches or drawings.......it has to be well along the way if tooling is being made....tooling cost big bucks to make.......you just dont make tooling and then change most of it......design is generally set before the tooling starts

The design of the truck?

I seriously doubt Tesla will publish that. That will have to come once it’s been unleashed in the wild.

I agree. Only the 10% -80% range matters for cross country travel, so 500 EPA = 450 real = 225 towing 100% = .7 x 225 = 157.5 miles towing real world range. This matches up with the Rivian / Lightning pack size and efficiency data. If you increase CT to 180 kWhr min, and give tesla a better cg and overall efficiency, that is doable. I am hoping Tesla squeeks out the last 20 miles somehow and we get a real world 180 mile range. I am in at that performance level, especially if they go with 900V architecture / charging curve and can optimize the charging to achieve 30 minute 10/80 charge rate.
