According to Tesla, you "order through a referral link". So to apply a referral, you must have started at the URL "https://ts.la/REFERRALnnnnn" either by accident or by a hidden/sneaky link.

The hax is likely on the client side, not Tesla's side.

The only time you use a referral link is when someone sends you one or you select one. If you go to Tesla directly there is no referral as far as I recall for either of our Teslas.

I don’t think that is either right or good. I am down enough on cookies as it is, and I happen to believe that referral links by and large reward people that don’t need reward - except friends and family.

Delete the cookies for tesla.com and you should be good. OR, maybe visit a different referral link first, such as your own.

Well Gus, obviously your more than just a pretty face. It was indeed a cookie. After 4 + hours on hold with Tesla Support I hung up. Deleted all cookies and the Tesla app worked as advertised. In the meantime deleting the cookies made login here with LastPass impossible as there was a PW mismatch. I tired to Reset the Password 4 times but never received the reset email. 3 emails to admin here was all it took to get a new PW manually put in place tonight. All in all, a really good day with technology (roll eyes).

Thanks again to Gus for the good trouble shooting. I have no idea how ram Kumar's link got matched to my account, Based upon Tesla's lack of responsiveness I'll probably never know.

Nope, I'm slightly brighter than that. My access (several times now) was direct to Tesla.com. I have cars and solar and use it all the time. The referral will be by me, for me. Apparently It is not changeable unless I speak to Tesla directly (3:15 and waiting). After several reboots it will not go away on it's own and I have no way to undo/redo the referral. Really nice situation and has me thinking do I really want to get yet another vehicle from a company this unreachable when a problem arises.

The issue is once a referral code has been installed (by whatever means) it leaves a referral code cookie on the system. The Tesla App doesn't have a way to delete this cookie so restarting the order still brings up the existing referral code. Gus found the specific cookie and deleted it. I took the shotgun approach and deleted all the cookies present on my computer which removed the unwanted referral code.

The remaining issue is how this this random guy get his referral code installed on my system. I visit a lot of Tesla related sites and watch a lot of youtubers that have referral codes but I would never intentionally click on one of those as I intend to use them for any new Tesla vehicle purchases. Hopefully is was just a random, one off thing and this guy hasn't figured out a way to more surreptitiously distribute his referral code to unsuspecting people.

Another concern is that my call to Tesla, midday on a Wednesday was put on hold for over 4 hours until I gave up. Not having an automated call back system is inexcusable for a software technology company like Tesla. They do manage to insert a few "did you know this about the cars" comments along with the horrible Gen Z hold music. Really disappointing that they don't pay more attention to customer communication. While some people overload such systems with stupid questions, it is an important part of doing business and customer satisfaction. Tesla needs to pay more attention to this aspect of their business or it will bite them in the ass.

Because it's an expense for them, Tesla actually makes it kind of difficult to even use a referral code. The link concept was to stimulate sales and reward people promoting the brand on Youtube. It was an advertising expense and so Tesla doesn't care if it has issues because they don't believe it helps the bottom line profits all that much. The damn 4+ hour wait on their "Customer Service" number that they don't even publish, is a whole nuther can of worms.

I have 2 Teslas and a CT reservation. Iwas trying to order a Model 3 SR for our daughter this morning and once I found the right vehicle I clicked the Details button and was immediately informed that my "referral" to the person in the screen shot photo below was in place. I have no idea who this person (Ram Kumar) is but he has apparently successfully hacked THE or MY Tesla App. I looked for somewhere to report issues on the Tesla APP with no luck. No phone numbers nor email addresses were available. I called ny local service center and they transferred me to the motherships Customer Service Line. I've been on hold for 2 hrs and 49 minutes with no help or alternatives. Any suggestions? I posted my issue on X to Musk but this rather serious issue seems unreportable. WTF Tesla!!!!

I've clicked on, while searching for a particular Tesla product on Google, the first sponsored link which went to that product on Tesla.com but had a referral. So someone paid to have their referral link on the sponsored links. That referral stays on your cookies and you have to delete your cookies to "unlink" that referral.
