As we await the launch of unsupervised FSD (at least in Austin for Cybercab) in a few weeks I've been spending some time digging in at the edges of Tesla's software to see how it can interpret our unstructured world, especially in non-paved, non-marked roads and I stumbled on an example right in my own driveway.

Situation, i have a circular driveway with a straight section on one side. Everything except where I park in front of the garage is gravel. No markings, no lines, just gravel. We've also got a lot of trees, grass and shrubbery around and as I was reversing in this morning the parking animation caught my eye. It's "seeing" quite a bit and interpreting in real-time. Trees (including defining the size and location of trunks), shrubs, the edge of the gravel, the width of the gravel, etc. are all clearly captured and interpreted. While this make seem obvious in a paved parking lot with painted lines, this situation is the exact opposite.

So if we've got this high-resolution mapping in 3D at low speeds, how clearly is it seeing at road speeds? We have the overly simplified FSD visualization, but my gut tells me its still seeing and interpreting something close to this high-resolution parking view in real-time - which is crazy not only because it has to map and interpret but also determine actions - accelerator, brake, turning input, etc. in real-time as well. Here is where efficient, and accurate, processing matters. We can debate whether camera-only is the right approach due to occlusions, reflections, rain, etc. but simplifying the models to one time of input - visual data - against a neural net for interpretation sounded batsh*t crazy but might be the only really efficient and scalable way to solve autonomous driving.

PS, I really liked the radar in my HW3 Model S.

To add on to your point, when I'm parking into my garage I've noticed the cameras are seeing behind the wall of my garage. I literally have another living room on the opposite side of the wall and it clearly outlines the open space. How is this possible?

I've noticed this too, it sees through walls and around trees. I don't think we'll ever know the full extent of their witchcraft, but there is clearly some secret sauce dialed into those spatial models.

I’d be interested to see a picture of this if you’re willing to share

It is pretty amazing what it can see/do with just a 5MP camera sensor!

Maybe HW5 will bring 48 MP sensor with 8k video!! :D

If the car approached the house and the garage is attached then it can ‘guess’ there is a room beyond the garage. If there is magic involved then it would show what is in the room beyond. My guess is that it cannot.

I just know that CT's FSD left turn has a design flaw, because almost every time it hits the middle partition, or brushes past the left front side of other people's cars, and I get scolded every time.

The CT has a front mounted radar, I don't think its being used, but its there. I assume it was a hedge against possible government regulations that would require a muliti-sensor suite to allow unsupervised self driving. EDIT: There is no forward facing radar hardware.

Tesla will not achieve FSD with cameras alone. I would bet my house on it. Every time I turn on my wipers and there is significant dirt/dust build up, the CT freaks out and tells me to take over immediately because it cant see. It can take 4 or 5 hydrated wipes before the camera is useful again.

I just figured the nav map was overlayed with the camera vision. The truck needs to compare map roads and buildings with the vision of the cameras overlay that data process and execute.

Wait, is this true????
...

Yes, the Tesla Cybertruck is equipped with front radar, although it's not actively used in Tesla's current Autopilot system. The radar is located behind the front bumper.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Radar Presence:
The Cybertruck does have a front-mounted radar sensor, positioned behind the front bumper.
WHAT!

OK…so does the new 2026 Model Y also have this radar???
