Weird motor like sound coming from the back right side. Feels like an air pump that’s vibrating.

Hi,

I picked up my Cybertruck from Princeton, NJ this past weekend on the 16th and noticed this sound within maybe 30-45 minutes of driving.

I initially thought it’s just a sound related to rising and lowering the vehicle. Anyhow, I drove the truck from New Jersey to Toronto and it was fine all along the road trip… however all throughout I kept the ride height at lower.

a couple days ago, I adjusted the ride height to high and medium to show a few friends. Since then, this rattling / motor like sound from the rear back right side just begins to occur whenever I am driving.

as soon as I place the truck in Park, I hear the air exist from the suspension and the sound is eliminated. As soon as I begin to drive, it’s quiet for maybe… 1 or 2 minutes and the sound reoccurs again.

I have scheduled an appointment in Mississauga (outside of Toronto) for next week as I’ll be here for work for another month or two. I’ll see what the service folks say… but I’m afraid they may not be able to solve it as the Cybertruck in Canada only recently began deliveries so perhaps they have yet to come across this issue.

any other DIY tips? Tricks? Willing to try anything.. each time I am on the road last couple days, this been a huuuge pain in the butt not to mention I wonder if this isn’t fixed, what will be the issues down the road.

I am attaching a video with the sound.

The last person that had this problem didn’t remember that they had set the car to raise up to very high or something in multiple locations.

So? Have you done the same thing? Remember the car treats this just like it does a front lift on sports cars like my vet. A geotags/GPS memorized the location and - every time you are there it will raise the car up unless you deselect that location. The only way to avoid that is to quickly tell it I don’t want you to remember this location when you do it in the first place. It’s a small button and tricky to hit while driving sometimes.

AND - if you were driving around playing with it and raising the suspension you might have a bunch of locations geotagged that you didn’t really mean to set.

Definitely what you’re doing when you exit the vehicle is the car dropping down into entry mode. Whatever height you’re driving at it quickly depressurize this so that you can exit at the lowest possible position. You can turn that off in settings if you don’t like it.

We're getting the same sound, and it tends to happen around home where we have set height a lot.

I tried to reproduce this with the service people, but I couldn't (probably due to being in a different location). I think it's related to GPS tagging of height preferences like the previous poster said.

I wish there was an easier way than what is stated in the manual.

To remove an auto-raising location
If no longer want the suspension to automatically raise at a location, touch to deselect Always raise at this location in the popup that appears when you arrive at a saved location.

Thanks! Yes, this is one feature I don’t mind. My wife is on the shorter side and it’s helped the kids get in and out of the vehicle.
I’ll try turning this off though to see if it helps.

ah… this is making more and more sense. I had read about GPS location and the AI determining whether to raise the vehicle based on the car’s historical data and other Tesla’s that have passed in that area.

I’ve noticed this motor sound on the way to school in the mornings, the way back from school in the mornings and again when it’s time for school pick ups!

so that route and location may be the culprit. I’m going to turn it off or remove it as per your recommendation and see. I’ll update this thread once I try that.

I don't hear this sound, ever. The air pump should have sufficient NVH to make it nearly silent.

I don't raise/lower manually much, but it moves between medium/entry height every time I drive and park.

It's possible you have an air leak, wearing out the pump. You should check the alerts in Service Mode to look for relevant codes.

Definitely not an air leak. 100% he has multiple locations geotagged and just like any other air pump, if you’re using it a lot it has to refill that tank and that’s what’s happening.

As you’ve said, since you’re not using it much, there isn’t much happening. I have a lot of different places in a short distance where I need elevation changes (there’s been massive roadwork all around my neighborhood) and I know exactly the sound that he’s talking about.

It’s not a bug or a defect; normal within spec operation.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t check error codes, but I’m certain of the diagnosis.

I have mine in the shop right now. It will run the compressor every time I get in and run for 30 minutes or so then a big poof sound happens and it turns off. Not sure if it is the same. They told me to keep it at low for testing to see if it still does it. We will see if they find anything odd about it as they have it.

Quick update

Based on some of the feedback and tips. I think I found a fix!

A few other users in this forum suggested to turn off / remove saved locations. Within this option, there is one for ride height.

I’ve turned this off and removed saved ride height. So far this has stopped the air compressor from running.

Basically this prevents the car from pumping in air to the compressor based on the GPS location.

So far we’ve got a success and it’s been silent!

I noticed that on previous routes where I’ve gotta drive over a few speed bumps. The system recognizes this and adjusts the ride height to this. I do this one particular route 2 times in the morning and 2 more in the afternoon for basically (school drop offs and school pickups).

Now after turning off the GPS location ride height feature, it’s been back to normal and silent…
