NO but not customer at fault. The only bad customer Tesla has proven to be, is maybe on Panasonic’s co-development insistence. Interestingly, GM laughed at the engineering hubris of Tesla to sell a battery with 1000’s of connections by using 18650’s.

Panasonic only had one buyer that wanted 18650 cells to begin with - Tesla. Hence, the co-development partnership which Tesla structured to its purposes. Panasonic have their “chemistry”. Panasonic seem to have been rewarded sufficiently to remain in GigaNEVADA.

AND Tesla seems to have disproven GM sufficiently that its on a 3 generation cell battery scheme - 4680. Tesla have also moved-on to Li sourcing, cell design and manufacture.

Last laughs are the sweetest!

Panasonic has lots of customers.

They can walk away from the Tesla deal if they need to. It would be painful, but not devastating.

Yeah, when Tesla started designing battery packs, the 18650 was the most common battery in laptops. It's in all sorts of rechargeable devices and static storage, just because it's so ubiquitous.

I don’t know for sure if Tesla has made such a commitment but even if they had, provided investment in the factory is made by Panasonic, it would not be wise for Panasonic to put themselves in such a bind if they don’t have to. Tesla may not want that either. Let’s say some kid in lab in Singapore figured out how to put fusion in a can and Elon bought the tech. If he could make a CT with 500,000 mile range off of one can next year, he would not want to be stuck buying the batteries. It would be better for both of them if Panasonic could sell the batteries to someone that does not have access to the new Tech. I know Tesla looks bomb proof today but there are thousands of unlikely or unthinkable things that can happen to any business. Elon could have a heart attack and his replacement could be moron while other companies jump in to fill the vacuum. Thinking things will always be like it is today is not a good way of thinking for any business that want to survive long term.

They really have you over a barrel at that point. Often it’s a symptom of a buyer or seller with lopsided power and one ends up getting little to no profit while the other rakes it in.

While I was plunking down 73K for the Boss Lady's new 2022 Dodge Ram 3500 I told the salesman (we were going through the usual dick dance that you go through at a dealership) "if Tesla had a truck that would do what that 3500 would do we wouldn't even be having this conversation."
Unless Tesla or some other startup comes up with a heavy duty mid range truck (between the CT and the Tesla semi) ICE vehicles are going the be around for the next twenty or thirty years.
