Just picked my truck up in February. We live in a rural town with lots of snow. Cracked windshields are the norm due to lots of gravel roads, ice melt and rock spread on the roads, etc. Was hoping the glass was much tougher based on all the hype the last 5 years. I know windshields aren't usually covered under warranty, but has anybody gone through this yet? I've never owned a new car before this and have only rarely in my life filed an insurance claim because I'm afraid of rates going up once you actually try and take advantage of the insurance. Any wisdom out there?

Tesla has sometimes replaced glass under warranty, especially in cases where there isn’t any noticeable “chip” or impact point. The Service Center twice replaced my windshield and once replaced my roof glass. The roof glass because the service center cracked it and the windshield because of an anomaly at delivery (small weird internal fracture) and then a second time because it was not aligned correctly during install and would not permit the ceiling shifter to properly connect with the front camera mount.

The truck did not sound the same afterwards with constant rattles and squeaks from the headliners that were mis-installed or more correctly only partially installed with brackets bent and missing internal clips. I sold that truck to a dealer and bought a second one.

Well, on my M3P I cought a rock and filed a claim to replace. Cost was 1400$ but a few weeks after geico was like we raising your rates to 1600$/month for your car is high risk. Needless to say I switched to progressive. If you have the cash to fix it your self do so, save insurance for big deals.

Just heard back from Tesla. Almost $2700. What a joke. Looks like I'm screwed driving around a hillbilly CT. Not paying that and not submitting to insurance to just make me pay it in the end through increased monthlies. Ugh.

Do you think a PPF would help?

Previous windshield replacement with USAA did not impact rates. Not for ct though. Call your insurance

USAA initially charged me $1,800 per 6 months when I bought CT in Feb 2025. My rates are now $3,800 per 6 months after2 months. I have had zero at fault accidents or tickets in my life. I have been in two accidents: one totaled my car 2017 ( rear ended my Mercedes S550) and once I was hit while inside shopping resulting in $15k damage (2019). Both other drivers had insurance. I’m flabbergasted and shopping for new insurance.

I also don't understand why is it so expensive. Yes, it's big, but it's also flat which means it's significantly easier to manufacture. And sure some component of that will be the labor, but is it like 40 hours worth of labor as opposed to an hour or two ?

Tesla likes to highlight how the cost of operating their vehicles results in significant savings over time, but astronomically expensive repairs (inevitable reality of ownership) eat away all of those savings. Not a great PR.
