And the layout of the terrain traps mostly… (wait for it) dust and moisture as reductions to visibility. Which is why the Santa Ana winds clear things out so well. It blows dry air from the desert into the basin and without the moisture, instant unlimited visibility. It‘s why we have “the marine layer” as a major catalyst of our weather. And “June Gloom”.To be fare. The pollution issues has alot to do with how the city is located in a basin with mountains all around it, trapping all the nasty stuff. When the Santa Ana kicks up, can either illeviate or exacerbate the issue. I like to remember Cali in the enclosed picture taken on a hill behind my house. That year (2008), only 19 days out of the year where I can see Mt Baldy on the left and Arrowhead springs on the right, sigh...

Were things worse in the 60’s? Yep. Did it kill everyone? Nope. Do people who grew up here have significantly higher rates of lung cancer when compared to the rest of the nation, Nope. Asthma? Nope. COPD? Nope. Second hand smoke kills far more people annually than the environmental issues of just about anywhere in this country.
