I’m so tempted to start a thread asking whether Tesla can take legal action against anybody who falsely claims that stainless steel rusts. Is that possible? Does this qualify for defamation grounds for CT? :p

Pitting = loss of material. Also those components are regular steel. The stainless components looked just fine in those pics.

Where’s the close-up of the flux capacitor @CyberGus? I hope my CT looks that good 40 years from now!
Yeah it looks so awesome. We can keep changing wrap to make CT look brand new every time! We just have to stay strong to not upgrade :p

Many parts are designed knowing they rust. Let's not debate specifics on a world you know very little on.

OMG the front stabilizer in my S is rusting. It's Oh what should I do? Nothing. It will fail after I am dead. 40 years from now. It was designed to be made of hss and it will rust.

Move on.

You need anger management. Did you design the hooks or hubs? Gonna say probably not. If you saw heavy corrosion on your S suspension you gonna investigate or just ignore it?

That's definitely not possible, lol. I recommend a ten second google search before you start saying stainless steel can't rust.

I'll save you ten seconds: " Even with these impressive features, stainless steel can and does rust after all, it's 'stainless' not 'stainfree'. "

rust 1 of 2 noun
1 : the reddish brittle coating formed on iron especially when chemically attacked by moist air and composed essentially of hydrated ferric oxide

rust 2 of 2 verb
1 : to form rust : become oxidized

Stainless steel is not "chemically attacked by moist air". Exposure to air will not cause a layer of ferric oxide to form.

I suppose it does "rust" in that it oxidizes, but that's the chromium "rusting" into Chromium Oxide, which becomes the protective layer.

Or do you just know metal and the job each metal is supposed to perform?

I know most of, if not all the parts that are structural on cars/trucks.

There you go again. "Heavy corrosion".

Where is this "heavy corrosion"?

If you don't know hubs rust. Mike drop. Exit yourself out the building. Do you even know what steel hubs are made of? Literally crying for all the Tesla engineers that are getting people that know nothing about trucks.

Oh and the SC techs that are going to get these questions. I cry for them as well.

Edit add.

Already said not sure what's going on with tow hooks. Remember RC. Maybe they didn't coat it. Have we seen it on a delivered car?

Sure I get it. When someone doesn't know something they often get defensive. That's why we all come here.

See you see that rusty bar in the middle of that Tesla? That is solid steel. It's rusty. OMG we are all going to die as it will fail. Never get in it. I thought all model S were made of aluminum. All hyperbole of course.

It will fail 30 years after I am dead. The car will be totaled by then or in different market. Non US.

You can replace it if ya feel like it. You know. Anything that has rust has lost some integrity or some jazz like that.

Replace the hubs. You know like every time it rains. Yet I so doubt many have even pulled center caps out to find out what the mystery is behind them.

At the end of the day, they've created their own alloy and have not released any documented testing that we know of. I'm sure it will be more than good enough for pretty much everyone, and it'll be a lot better than anything else out there for those of you who know you live in harsh conditions are are lazy about washing (myself included).

To get more into the technical discussions with the non-average person, we've heard they've said HFS is branched from 30X, closest to 304 from what I last heard. The lack of molybdenum in 304 is what makes it rust a lot more than 316. HFS will stop a bullet, the same thickness of 316 probably wouldn't, but even 316 will rust.

pics of 304 stainless steel rusting in every sense of the word, taken in Marine Atmosphere of South China Sea (D is 6 months)
