I am now really curious about those two holes in the mid gate. Can something be modified to put fans in those to pump air in/out. That would be a simple, elegant, easy solution using existing camp mode.

I wonder if Tesla is planning something. Or maybe WAS planning something but canned it due to issues. I would agree that many people may not want to sleep back there. Maybe they are thinking the tent is just superior use case (but expensive!)

Wouldn't it be better to put the unit inside the vault?

Also, have you figured out how to turn the vault LEDs on and off from inside?

To control the vault lights from inside the vault with the app you must have either cellphone or wifi connectivity. The same is true for the 120VAC outlet and various other features. Only Bluetooth connectivity is needed to open/close the tonneau cover, open the gate, lock/unlock the vehicle, and open/close the frunk.

I couldn't find a button for the lights. Where is it in the app?

Have you downloaded the latest app?
Indeed.

However, I'm using the iPhone SE, which has a slightly different aspect ratio from the newer "notched" iPhones. I've noticed other places in the Tesla app where text and objects are misaligned, so I'm guessing the horizontal line on the "Controls" page is rendered below the visible part of my screen.

[UPDATE: The controls appear in the app now, it must be an intermittent rendering issue.]

It turns out that those two openings in the back wall of the cabin are covered by fabric that limits the amount of air that will pass between the cabin and vault.
Have you thought about putting the heat pump inside the cabin of the vehicle and threading the exhaust tubes through these two holes? Wouldn't that be an ideal setup? Might help with moisture control and also the cabins heat pump running might help as well if needed. Do you have any photos of what this looks like, or how to get to it (I'm assuming you'd need to pop the plastic off in the vault or something?)

Edit - read your post again. Why did you give up because of the material?

I'm not sure I understand what you are suggesting. I originally wanted to pump cabin air into the vault through the rear window, but removing the rear window proved to be too challenging for me, and there's no aftermarket replacement for the rear window at present that features a sliding section.

I suppose one could run 4" ducts from the cabin to the vault through one of the cabin windows with some kind of window insert with 4" duct connections like this:

In that case, I wouldn't need the BougeRV A/C unit since the CT's heat pump would provide heated or cooled air to the vault. The reason I didn't pursue this approach was because I thought it would be too inefficient. Why heat or cool the cabin AND the vault when the cabin is not being used?

What I came up with is this installation of the 2900 BTU BougeRV A/C unit (plenty big enough to cool the vault's 50 cu ft volume.)

I still need provision for ventilation, though. I'm thinking of putting some kind of a 4" diameter PVC or ABS plastic collar on the intake port with holes to allow a small amount of outside air to be drawn into the circulating air stream.

I'm not sure I answered your question.

maybe i misunderstood your post about the 1.5" ports that were covered with "material". i thought they were under the window, in which case i was thinking of putting the tubes through them and venting the heatpump through them.

have you tried your setup in the rain? i don't like the idea of having the heat pump on top of the vault and getting rained on, and having to keep the vault partially open (cause of rain).

When camping, I usually set up my 10" x 10" Crown Shades canopy and park the back of the CT under it at night for protection from forecasted rain (not often needed in the desert). In the day it provides shelter from sun and rain (and wind with optional side panels).

Without the canopy, you can't open the tonneau in the rain without getting soaked. Even opening the tonneau in the morning after a night rain will allow some water to drip into the vault onto your bedding. Set up is easy but attaching guy ropes takes some time.
