So damaged the tailgate top applique on my truck. Stupid mistake. And it's bugging me.
Looks pretty easy to change out: https://service.tesla.com/docs/Cybe...UID-C8F2EB42-D393-448C-A1E9-9FC1830220D5.html

But in reading those instructions it says:
Vehicles built after 11/4/24 and vehicles that have had the sail applique retrofit performed are equipped with tailgate appliques with PN: 2037459-00-A. Vehicles built before 11/4/24 and have not had the sail applique retrofit performed are equipped with tailgate appliques with PN: 1812376-00-C. If the tailgate applique is being replaced, check the applique part number and make sure to replace it with one with the correct part number.

So mine is a early Foundation series and is slated for that recall. https://www.tesla.com/support/recall-sail-applique-rework

Does that mean that when they do the sail applique retrofit, they replace the tailgate applique too? I didn't think the sail work had anything to do with it.

The part is cheap, $50, but I have to get it from a service center. Small price to pay to make it look pretty again, but that note made me think it gets updated with the sail applique recall. Anyone have any info on this?

I dont have an answer for your question but I pulled my tailgate applique off and installed this:

This is what I recommend for you. You'll never worry about scratching, denting, scuffing that cheap plastic crap. I was a little reluctant to spend the money but in time I realized this was such an inexpensive investment. I would have ruined the plastic applique numerous times.

Looks like it would be replaced. You might be able to confirm by asking in the app in your service appointment (when you get one).

How's it holding up? How long have you had it? Not familiar with that site.

To (re) confirm, yes, they replace both sail trims and the tailgate. I know this, because (a) I'd wrapped mine in Armor, and (b), they did a really shitty job, it's now loose and rattly, so be sure to check yours afterwards, as I apparently waited longer than 48hrs, so now they won't fix it (sail trims are loose too, following the refit).

The procedure includes widening the sail mounting holes to reduce binding (increase float).

I think its been 5 months now. It looks great. I've tied many long items that extend out the truck, causing them to rest on the applique and I have not a single scratch.

Here are photos, its raining, sorry...

My tailgate cap was replaced with the Sail retrofit (I didn’t ask for the retrofit, was done during sc visit to replace dead vault/tailgate buttons)

Interesting, the tailgate applique has 4 allen bolts to hold it in place. Did your tailgate applique have these bolts BEFORE the recall or only after?

Mine was built Nov 15, 2024 (so after the recall / updated applique) and mine does not have those 4 bolts.

That's a 3rd party stainless steel cover, not Tesla's.

$250? Oof. How sturdy is this cover?

Its STURDY!
I also felt that $250 was steep. But as I look back now after months of use....I absolutely do not regret the purchase. It was money well spent.
I think it really depends on your use of the bed in the truck. If you never lean anything over the tailgate, dont buy this. If you use your truck as a truck, this will keep your tailgate looking new.
