Any chance Tesla changes the mounting so that it mounts to top bolt points rather than glue? I want the OEM lights because of software integration, but hate the glue on mount. I like the after market mounts but want the OEM communication to the lights🫤

Im considering a mounting method that still uses adhesives but perhaps a less permanent adhesive strip on the windshield, like high capacity command strips and incorporates relatively flat metal brackets on either side that goe along the roof to the front roof mounts to do most of the work of holding it in place.

The idea is that if i ever need to remove it (windshield replacement) it could be put back on relatively easily.

any thoughts/critiques?

While I think this is a fine idea, I don’t think it’s necessary. When I traded in my last car, I used a gigli saw to remove the aftermarket lightbar I had on there with VHB. It was incredibly easy.

Just have to be careful around the wire area not to mow through them unless you want to go through a saga like I did with the oem bar.
If you stick it on the way I did (VHB and suction cups) and the windshield cracks ,you can just remove it like that, remove the old VHB, put new stuff on and reinstall on your new windshield.

here is a link to the thread where I discuss my complete dumbassery so hopefully the same doesn’t happen to you:

What if you could have both? Tesla UI and 3rd party lights?
As it is, you can on/off lights from the outlets and mods tabs, just not the lights tab.

If only someone would work on something like that. Jeepers, that would be great.

No license needed if one is willing to work within the limits of the stock UI: 3 active modes and 0-100% slider...

You make a fair point- but how well can you really clean the mating surfaces? The glass yes, but the plastic housing of the bar? Idk… These definitely were not designed to be removed/reinstalled- i get the impression that for CB owners, tesla would basically rip it off, throw it out, and slap another one on with a windshield replacement.

for anyone else, i think its unlikely you'd get a replacement unless they start selling them (though i suppose an unscrupulous SC may be more likely to order and install a replacement if you did an oem install…)

It would be the absolute worst lighting option available for you in those conditions. The daytime running light on the frunk is dangerous at night in the driving snow. All those lumens on the roof would multiply that hazard and prevent you from seeing ANYTHING but snow. Worse than jumping to hyperspace.
Yes, i agree, for forward vis, but the ditch lighting concept is interesting

The beauty of VHB is that if you go slowly and evenly, you can remove it pretty cleanly.
any leftover residue can be removed with goof off type stuff and then you can clean that all off with isopropyl or acetone.
I have consistently been able to get surfaces that previously had VHB on them squeaky clean before.
I’m not saying it’s super easy but it’s definitely doable

Good to know for sure. I guess the other part of it is that if for some reason it flies off, again, wont be replaced. And Tesla DEFINITELy wont be on the hook if it damages another vehicle if that does happen. I wish it wasnt such a hassle or risk to install cuz i do think it looks really good.

Yeah. Me too. Also wish they weren’t asking damn near $2500 for them.

Eh doubt it. They seem to be all in on the glue it to the glass approach..

I think they intend for those mounts to be used for the crossbars they sell and all the other roof mounted racks on the market.

I dont know how deey integrated the light bar software is to the OS but regs on lights are pretty stringent. If there is any liability to be had, even if only software related, im sure tesla would steer clear. Im genuinely a bit surprised they even released an OEM hardware product that cant even legally be “connected” by the installers at the sc… wish they just integrated it behind the windshield like the prototype…:(
