Yup. That's why I made the obviously intended to be funny post. It's sort of like headlines:

"Vehicle in crash" or "Tesla in crash". They always call out Tesla.

They do the same with EVs. There are a LOT more ICE vehicles and the average age of them is much older than that of EVs.

It would be interesting to see the number of EVs per 100,000 registered since 2020 that have caught fire vs. the same timeline of ICE vehicles per 100,000 registered.

It's kind of unfair to compare cars from the 80's, 90's and today to EVs from just the last 10 years or so.
From AI - so take it for what it's worth.

Gas cars catch fire far more often than EVs; a common statistic is that gas cars have about 61 times more fires per 100,000 vehicles sold than EVs. Specifically, there are approximately 1,530 fires per 100,000 gas cars compared to 25 fires per 100,000 EVs sold.

  • Gas cars: Approximately 1,530 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold.

  • Electric vehicles (EVs): Approximately 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold.

  • Comparison: This means gas cars are roughly 61 times more likely to catch fire than EVs, when comparing per 100,000 sales.

The CT bounced off the BMW and then hit a 18 wheeler.
Head on collision and then hit by an 18 wheeler.
To be fair, there is no way to know which car she was reffering to when she said "it then bounced off and hit an 18-wheeler..."

It could have been the BMV that hit the 18-wheeler... 🤷🏽‍♂️

Sgt. Dallas shouldn't be working in Houston, jus saying.

I am gonna assume that the BMW driver is the fatality.

My local news says.... "After the BMW hit the Cybertruck, investigators said Tesla bounced off and hit an 18-wheeler traveling eastbound."

And yes, the BMW going the wrong way.

SMGDH!

So many questions then I always have to remember it's Houston and a complete dump filled with some of the worst drivers you could ever encounter. Texas as a whole is awful, you cannot drive a mile from your home without seeing some stupid @!#$.

Hoping for a quick a full recovery of the CT driver. I would about guarantee that BMW was driving 100MPH+ and to know it hit head on with the CT and for the CT to then be hit by an 18-Wheeler is a testament to the build of the CT. My god what a horrific accident and again, so many questions.

Cool. Perhaps that is correct. The only vehicle fire I've actually seen in the last year was an older pickup truck.

I'd still want to know those same statistics on newer vehicles. For ICE cars, a LOT of them have been on the road a LOT longer than most EVs. a 1990 Camaro may be one of the 1,530 vehicles sold in 1990 that caught on fire but it may have done that when it was 35 years old.

2017 was the first year Tesla sold 100,000+ vehicles. Tesla sold 889,181 vehicles prior to 2021. MOST Tesla vehicles, and therefore almost all EVs are 2022 model year or newer which makes them all fewer than 6 years old.

To compare ICE to EV, the real question is:
How many ICE vehicles less than 6 years old have caught on fire out of each 100,000 sold?

Curious if FSD was on
I found it strange that the media article didn't insert the mandatory statement "It's unclear whether the Tesla was driving itself at the time of the collision".

So imagine my surprise when it had to come from a forum member!

No, she didn't. You are experiencing selective hearing. Listen to it again. She said "it" bounced off and hit an 18-wheeler...

Ok, then maybe it is true. Do you have a link to your source?

Mainly I just want to know if FSD would have prevented this!

Wow extremely impressive and hope-giving that they took the driver to the hospital. I am really praying for him to pull through.

Man, Houston area is tough on Cybertrucks, first there was a early fiery high speed crash (Aug 2024) in Baytown where is took 6-7 months to release the driver's name via lawsuit. Now this one, which looks catastrophic, but thank goodness survivable. EDIT: Sad outcome for the occupants of all vehicles, now double fatality according to updates.
