This is a project that has been on my list almost since day one. I finally found a free weekend to crank it out. I wanted a way to secure the tire in the bed while still leaving ample room underneath for 4x8 sheet stock, full sized cylinders, etc. First off, I will go ahead and say I know my welds suck. So all you accomplished welders may just want to avert your eyes :) . I just don't have steady enough hands anymore for aluminum.

Updated with pic of completed project including hold-down and aluminum shelf.

Plenty of clearance.

I used eye-nuts and slots in the plate for easy, tool-less, install and removal (as well as convenient connection points). The 1/4" plate was scrap from an old project (why it has TO-3 transistor holes in it).

I eventually will weld in a plate to attach a more standard tire wingnut mount.

I have a friend that is a fabricator and I would like to get him to make this for my truck, are you willing to give up more info as in the measurements and part numbers and pics of the eyebolts.
This is the best set up I have seen so far.
Awesome job!!

Thanks for sharing. Great design and looks very functional. Also, your welds are better than mine!!

Amazing. I've been looking for something like this as well for my road trips. Would really love to use the floating space to tie a spare down while still having the option to store 3 plastic bins below it. Please let us know if you would be able to sell this or if you can make me one and I can send you the funds for your time and material.

Awesome job!!
Here is the hardware I used:
  1. L Track Studs
  2. Eye bolts
  3. 1/2" to 3/8" threaded inserts
If I had a full fabrication shop, I would use a brake to add a 10 degree bend 1.25" from the top of the plate. I don't have one that can handle 1/4" plate so I ended up machining a 10 degree slanted recess instead:

The slots in the plates continue down the back slowly climbing out at a 10 degree grade. That way the L-track studs just slide up the channel as you lower the shelf until they pop out of the slot and you can install the eyebolt (nut).

(I also have a 10 degree spacer in the back so everything seats nicely. If you bend the plate instead, you can avoid the need for that)

You are welcome. Be sure to note:

"IMPORTANT NOTE: Installation requires the use of a 29/64 drill"

You will have to chase the 1/2" threads on the eyenuts with the drill bit to get the inserts to go in. I did not and boogered up two before actually reading the instructions.
