@AWDMK4 @TarheelCT @Alpine - What are your plans?

Curious how other multi-EV households are handling home charging setups.

For those with 2+ EVs:

* What chargers are you using?
* Single circuit with load sharing or separate circuits?
* Wall Connectors, mobile chargers, NeoCharge, etc.?
* Any regrets or “wish I had done this differently” advice?
* How do you handle overnight charging schedules?

Would love to see real-world setups. Pictures welcome.

Apologies if this has already been discussed.

Interested as well! We have 4 EVs - two NACS, two J1772. Getting by with a single Gen 2 Tesla Wall Charger.

But I just ordered a new Universal Wall Connector, as I want an electrician to move the charger location a few feet so the cable can reach four cars, instead of just two today.

Debating on keeping the Gen 2 and adding the Gen 3 vs. just adding the Gen 3. They can't load balance each other if two vehicles are charging, and since I have 3 Powerwalls, I've been able to pull ~40kW from the grid during peak usage. Adding the additional charger would push me over my home's 200A capacity, unless the Powerwalls are smart enough to throttle.

It's really going to depend on how much capacity you have. I have a 2nd gen Tesla HPWC for the Model Y, a Tesla UWC for the CT w/ Powershare, a NEMA 14-50 w/ a 40A Juicebox for the BMW i8 and a NEMA 6-20 for my Zero SR. I'm on a 320A split service so I can charge everything simultaneously if I needed to.

Last house I had 2 2nd gen Tesla HPWCs sharing the same 60A breaker. It wasn't perfect because it always saved 8A for the 2nd vehicle if it was plugged in, even if not actively charging. At the end of the day though, even that setup was enough to keep both EVs fully charged overnight.

I just had another Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector put in next to the current one that my wife uses with her MY. The energy company in my area is offering a $1200 rebate that goes towards the installation and charger so it works out pretty well, especially if you don’t have to run the cabling a long distance from the breaker. Since I plan to park the CT on the opposite side of the garage I bought a 20’ extension cable and ran it above the garage door near the ceiling and then I bring it down on the driver side of where the CT will park. Found a nice EV Cable retractor that keeps the slack cord out of the way. My thought process on this, was if I had the CT charging and the wife needed to leave she wouldn’t be backing over the cable, etc. just makes more sense.

I didn’t plan on doing any PowerShare so just got the cheaper charger. The gen3 do show up in the Tesla app which is nice to review history and charge features.

I am using a universal wall connector and a Gen 3 wall connector. I have mine on separate circuits connected to the main panel by the meter.

My only regret is not having the wiring run through the walls and instead having conduit lines. I plan to finish my garage someday and want a cleaner look.

For scheduling, my utility (xcel) works with a company called Weavegrid. They set charging schedules based on grid loads, peak pricing, and my needs. Basically I tell them I want my EVs charged by 6am and they work out all the rest. If I need to charge randomly, I just send a quick text and they override their automatic scheduling. Plus I get money off back on my utilities each year.

The biggest benefit, for me anyway, is that I can have both EVs charging at max and everything in my house going at the same time. I was amazed to see my load be above 38kW one time with both chargers going and the heat in my house on. I use a heat pump with a 10kW heat strip for subzero temps. I was little worried by how much power I was drawing, but everything worked great.

My attached 2 car garage currently holds my wife's '23 M3 RWD LFP and my '24 M3P. I installed a Tesla wall connector on a 60A dedicated circuit. Since I'm now retired and my wife still works from home, we alternate charging and it's worked out fine for almost 2 years.

When the CT arrives, the '23 M3 will be sold.... but the CT will not fit in the garage with the M3P. Until I build an external 2-3 car garage next year, the CT will be banished to the driveway, just outside the garage and I'll charge from the wall connector using a Vevor 21' NACS (Level 2 only) extension I recently purchased. I've tested it on the Model 3 and seems to work great and supports the full 48A, though I usually charge at 32A unless I'm in a hurry.

When the external garage is built, at a minimum, I'll install a Tesla Universal Wall connector in plans to be able to backfeed the house with a Tesla Gateway.

* What chargers are you using? 2x Tesla WC Gen 3
* Single circuit with load sharing or separate circuits? seperate, Main 200 amp, branch 125 amp to a subpanel, in subpanel 2x 60 amp for each of the WCs
* Wall Connectors, mobile chargers, NeoCharge, etc.? Tesla WC
* Any regrets or “wish I had done this differently” advice? none, researched, prepared, rehearsed, executed perfectly, massive 4 gauge copper SER (for 125 amp) needed two people, ran 65 feet, behind finished basement wall, cut temp holes for moving it
* How do you handle overnight charging schedules? now on Tesla charge on solar, but did scheduled time of use rate, super off peak $0.12/kw 10pm to 6am
Now the Powerwall decides

- 2 uWCs
- separate circuits (1-60A, the other 50A)
- we charge the CT from 12:15-3:30 and the Y from 3:00-6:00.
- I have not been as aggressive with Tesla over the PowerShare fiasco as I probably should have been. I’d really, really like it to work, and it was a major selling point for the FS, but it has never worked as advertised. Our setup is a non-Tesla solar array and inverter, and a Generac whole-home generator and transfer switch. Of course I have a Tesla Gateway for the PowerShare.

UWC and Gen 3 wall connector at our house. Have another Gen 3 wall connector on the garage shelf but have not installed yet. Group power management and charge on solar is hard to beat for me feature-wise.
And they talk to my powerwalls and cars properly.
What’s so inadequate about this setup that’s making so many people look elsewhere? I just don’t get it.
It’s not like our cars can charge faster than 48 amps if we buy something else.
Even cost when divided into the number of charges you will likely use it for over a period of usefulness is pretty competitive if you ask me.
A lifetime of interacting with chinesium every time I charge that can potentially burn my house down? No thank you. I’d rather spend another $150 or whatever.

i have a CT and a MY. my wife and i both normally only need to charge once a week. one wall connector on the side wall of the garage that can reach out to the drive way. she parks in the garage and i park the CT on the drive way. i also have a 30amp circuit on the back wall with a 14-30 outlet just incase we both need to charge at the same time. ill use a mobile connector to charge the MY and the wall connector to charge the CT. so far only used both at the same time once, and really didnt even need it. just used them both because i had them there.

I'm having the same conversation with a friend who just bought a new Cadillac Optic (w/NACS). He's mulling over which EVSC to purchase. To me, there is only one answer, Telsa.

It's cost competative, has a 4 year warranty if purchased from Tesla, was easy to install, looks nice and is ergonomic, and from what I can tell, the engineering of the unit is solid.
