Last Monday July 6 while driving using fsd received red screen of death alert advising to pull vehicle over immediately. Able to do so without any problems. Called customer service, they advised steer by wire malfuntioned and redundant system took over. Got in and out of the vehicle plus reset it. Advised to drive slowly home (close). Vehicle in garage. Service advised that it is in the queue for mobile diagnosis before advising next steps of repairs. No timeframe given for this process. As of this post July 9, no update. Anyone familiar with this or similar situation?

Very sad, you think after learning and taking years at working out all the bugs on the 2012 Model S, in three years the Cybertruck should be flawless!

If it isn’t broke don’t fix it!

New tech is the 😈 !!!

I sorta hate we are reliant on mobile service, tesla service for these vehicles. They can just be like - oh come back in a month while your car sits dead lol.

Previous service texts advise diagnosis/analysis is still ongoing…I asked for a loaner but was told ā€œfurther stepsā€ would be advised once analysis of problem completed…I sent the following question (generated by Grok) this morning and received this reply….
"Can you tell me whether the fault appears to have been a transient software issue or whether the diagnostics indicate a hardware problem with the steer-by-wire system? Also, do you recommend that I avoid driving the vehicle until you've completed your review?"

Hey there Jeffery, we will be able to get a better read of whether it is within the software or a possible part failure once our preparation team has concluded their portion of this service visit. We appreciate your patience!

I am going to call this afternoon. Grok questioned if the problem had been forwarded to engineering team in Austin. A reasonable assumption, otherwise ā€œseemsā€ in four days Tesla could have already determined/identified the problem.

Advised that it was the rear drive unit that died which adversely affected the SBW. CT will be towed 3.5 hours away to the Charlotte NC Service Center. Checking into loaner arrangements. Maybe Tesla saved money on the 59kCT by using left over 2024 drive motors!

Rear drive unit affected the SBW system? Interesting.

According to Grok….
On the Cybertruck, the steer-by-wire system doesn’t operate in isolation. It’s integrated with several other vehicle control systems, including the front and rear drive units, the stability control system, braking, and the high-voltage electrical system. If one of the drive units reports a serious fault or behaves unexpectedly, the vehicle’s safety systems may limit or disable steering assistance and other automated functions to keep the vehicle in a safe state.

Here’s why that can happen:

  • The drive units and steering system share information continuously. The vehicle needs to know exactly how much torque is being delivered to each axle to coordinate steering, traction, and stability.
  • A fault in a drive unit can trigger a cascade of protective actions. If the vehicle can’t trust the information coming from a drive unit—or if the drive unit isn’t responding correctly—the Cybertruck may issue a steering warning, disable Full Self-Driving, and in some cases enter a reduced-function mode.
  • The red steering warning you described while waiting at the traffic light is consistent with the vehicle deciding it could no longer guarantee normal steering performance, even if the steering hardware itself wasn’t defective.

Did you happen to get the error codes? Hard to know what failed without at least that. My PEPs module had a stroke a couple months ago and threw the car into limp, all they did was reflash the ecu and said šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø if it happens again let us know

Expect a call from Reuters. They troll forums and X looking for negative Tesla news.

Steer by wire is one of the Cyberttucks best features.
I do not think the Model S ever had steer by wire.
Why would you buy a Tesla if you do not want new innovative tech.
If you want 10 year old tech, get a Toyota.
