The gear locker. The smuggler’s bay. If I put stuff in there and the bed gets rained on or if I’m hosing off the bed, will that stuff get wet? I plan to store my boots and hard hat in there but if they’ll get wet then I’ll want to put it in a waterproof duffel bag or something…

There’s drainage around the edge of the gear locker but i don’t know how well it would hold up to heavy rain

I haven’t verified with rain but have done multiple high pressure power washes with the tonneau closed. While I’ve seen some light water around the bed, I have not seen any in the gear locker. I somewhat doubt the gear locker will become wet even with heavy rain especially if you have the tonneau closed.

I've hosed out the bed after wood-cutting with a hose and a garden nozzle, blasting out all the seams around the gear locker and not a drop got in. Not only is the gutter around it very wide and deep, the lid has a large, hollow round rubber seal, like a big door seal, that compresses when closed. It's protected from direct pressure spray by being well inset around the perimeter of the hatch door, so I don't see how water could get in unless both water drains were plugged with debris and a deluge of water was sloshed into the bed, overwhelming the plugged drains. Even then, that single compressed rubber seal would prevent serious leakage.

As long as you keep the two finger sized drains clear, and the bottom drain plug inserted, I think the smugglers bay will stay dry as a bone. It does stink in there though, from outgassing plastics. I've had mine 5 weeks and the stink has diminished by about 50%. Maybe I'll fill it up with hot soapy water with baking soda and let it soak.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I am storing all of my construction site gear back there now, which is especially convenient because the center console storage is quite a bit smaller than it was in the Yukon which this truck is replacing.

I’m really happy to read you have a dry bed. My tonneau has a seam popped about halfway that needs addressed, but haven’t had the time to get it into the city to fix. Anyway, first road trip with a significant rain storm— wet front section of the bed (far from seam) I also noticed the autoreverse errors even after two calibrations. So… I have hope there will be a dry “smuggler’s bay” after all! Thanks all!

by the way - WOW the beast is - a BEAST! KUDOS TELSA!!!!

Just realized you are talking about the small gear locker. I’m referring to the entire bed under the tonneau. Does anyone else have input whether or not it’s dry?

In my direct experience…

- Smugglers Cove will stay totally dry. I have hosed off the entire bed and not a drop got in.

- The vault (entire bed). This should stay mostly dry, but it is not waterproof. To add context: When I drive in rain, even heavy, 90% of the bed stays dry, but there can be a few wet areas at the front and back of the bed. If you have very rain sensitive stuff, put in a duffel, otherwise it should be fine. Example: Don’t fill the vault with decorative pillows and drive 4 hours in the rain and expect them all to be dry. Also, there will be some manufacturing variation, so it could differ from my experience.

My F-150 bed was not totally dry. It kept 99% of the water out, just like the Cybertruck, but under the right conditions it would leak a small amount. Some of it got past the Bak-Flip tonneau cover, and some of the leakage in my F-150 was muddy water that splashed up through the gaps in the bed seams. I haven't noticed this happening on the Cybertruck yet, but it probably could under just the right conditions of wind and rain and mud.

I put an ensolite foam scrap in the bed that measured about 4 feet x 5 feet, slightly smaller than the bed itself. Gear that I put on the foam would stay dry, because all the leakage was around the perimeter and couldn't get on top of the foam pad. The net result was the leakage wasn't a problem.
