Is it just me, or is this guy annoying as hell? I can see how the Cybertruck broke when he dropped it off the culvert. I can see how steel is more durable but will I ever stress my aluminum casting enough to cause it to break? I highly doubt it.
issue is if you ever get rear ended dont think of ever towing with your Cybertruck after. Either a write off or unsafe to tow.

I still think it would be weakened more from a force from the bottom than a force from the back.

This is a win-win for everyone. He will get more clicks and money. Tesla will get free testing and market compete analysis. We will get better casting if it’s really a problem. Who’s complaining? ?‍♂?

It’s not a win for those of us with Cybertrucks in our driveways…. Que everyone saying price we pay for early adoption etc… if there has been one on the road that sheared there will be many many more.. more to come on that if it’s true I’m sure.

Totally agree I’d like to see them repeat the test they did with the f-150 and the excavator with a new Cybertruck and see what happens… I bet it will shear off but I guess that’s the trade off we get in shear strength for rigidity of the gigacasting. Hopefully they can come up with some kind of reinforcement for this. It is a liability thing…
Agreed.

WD isn’t far off. I was actually surprised the frame was aluminum and was not surprised the aluminum snapped. I have had tools and other aluminum objects under stress just sheer.

That said, I never have and never will tow anything with the CT any more than a bike rack or a 2k lb raft trailer (if even that). Big towing is what my F350 and F150 is for. My Jeep is for intense off-roading. Yes, there is no way in hell I would take my CT on the waterfalls of the Moab Trifecta because I have watched those destroy bumpers.

“Still love the truck” ?. Because it’s saving me about $500 (calculated) in diesel each month and have no issues on CT HomeDepot runs, Sams Club, and leaving Ford Raptors/BMWs in my rear view camera when they want to race at stop lights. I bought it for errands, the speed, and the tech. As I have said in the past, use the right hammer for the right nail.

I do agree with what WD said in the beginning as it’s innovative and it’s thinking outside the box. That’s why I bought it. I also believe that if people are snapping frames for towing under the 11k limits on highways, there will likely need to be a recall at some point.

Remember, we all truly are beta testers here. It’s going to be a rough ride and maybe by v3, it may end up what we expected from a truck. I don’t regret it (yet - if it has an extended stay at a SC as some others have experienced, I will be pissed), because it’s a crap ton of fun to drive. Once we get FSD it will be even cooler. But I will admit, it’s not an all around truck that can replace my diesel and that’s why I hung onto it when I got the CT.

If you’re planning on dropping your truck from 6 feet onto a concrete block then don’t buy a Cyber Truck. It was never designed for that type of vertical load. I’ve seen Cyber Trucks pull a 40,000 lb sled and they weren’t designed for that either. If you don’t do stupid things with your truck and stay within mfg specs you’ll be fine. I pull 10,000 lbs with mine all the time and it’s not going to break. To claim Tesla should do something about the design is like complaining your truck didnt fly when you drove it off a cliff.

haha fair point! I honestly don’t think FS models out there will snap like this in their lifespan. One would total their car if rear ended that bad before hitch snaps out. Time will tell the truth. ?

We don't know it snapped. They said it hit a bump. Coulda just popped off the hitch. Also he didn't seem to drop it as far.

That all said, id like to see Tesla's response.
Drop it as far? Are you kidding? What didn't they do to the F150? The CT only took a single hit.

The failure mode of aluminum is that it breaks. The failure mode of steel is that is bends and reduces in strength.

The aluminum can be sawn off and replaced - as it's designed to.

Is the steel frame designed that way?

-Crissa
I heard aluminum is difficult to weld though... and the weld point will not have the same strength as the rest of the forged material?

I wanted to believe it was the concrete pipes too and I’m sure it had an impact but it’s clearly a deficiency Tesla must address ASAP! They cannot bury there heads in the sand on this one anymore!
I've seen the math and physics showing the force that the hitch sustained. It was in excess of 100,000 pounds, upwards.
