Is it to cut costs? Is there some other issue with the roof appliqués that made Tesla change the default to no flip doors?
It's probably just to speed assembly and give a cleaner look.

You have to remember that Tesla knows a very low percentage of all customers use those forward mounting points and they are always trying to optimize for efficiency. The fact that they reached Cybertruck profitability in the third quarter, a quarter which consisted exclusively of the higher priced FS models, almost certainly means they are not quite profitable now, at least until they further optimize the production line for efficiency.

If Ford or GM could ever be bothered to build a truck this technologically advanced, this capable, this nice, and this durable, I guarantee they would have to sell it for $180K to break even (and then they couldn't sell enough of them to break even). This is why they stick to low cost trucks, that they can sell at a high price (for what you get).

Tesla went all in on the Cybertruck, and are determined to keep it viable, which means keeping it affordable. I'm just glad they delete features almost no one uses instead of saving pennies by slapping cheaper wheels and tires on, cheapening up the bed and cabin materials, deleting the power tonneau, removing rear steer, putting crappy audio systems in, getting rid of the armor glass, etc.

Good grief!

Yes, because it was manufactured before yesterday. The changes are effective 11/14/24.

We purchased a 3rd party set of 4 crossbars for skis (for powder skis, and for when the bed is full of other stuff). When using the back 2 sets of crossbars and mounting as per the ski rack manufacturer recommendation (skis face backwards) the skis stick out a fair bit behind the cybertruck... which doesn't work in our garage. So we're using the middle 2 crossbars as needed.

For those with many skis, I tested out our Kuat grip 6... it looks like you can fit 2 kuat grip 6 mounts across the car (the ski rack has 2 mount settings, use the inner ones) but you can only on the back two crossbars (which are wider) at least on the 3rd party crossbars. This means that you can fit 12 sets of skis pretty easy on the rear two crossbars. The front two crossbars aren't as wide and could only fit 1 of those. Still, 18 sets of skis on the roof should be enough for most people :)

For our use case for now we're just using one Kuat grip 6 on the roof as needed, but generally putting skis in the bed

This seems strange to me. If I were to install them I would only have them above the roof so I have free access to the bed. Furthermore, my primary use for the roof rack is bringing home 20' stock. Even using all four, I still need an extension in the front (connecting to the front hitch points). I would not want to have to bridge the distance all the way from the bed. Glad I got a foundation!

Expensive, but it's one of the accessories I wanted to use with my voucher.

Sorry missed that part...I guess lucky me :)
No apology is necessary. The entire point is for us to help each other out! ? Somebody found that information and posted it above. Since I saw it, I shared it with you that’s the way it should be.

And of course you’re lucky, you got a freaking cybertruck, dude!! ?

Tesla knows demand for the factory crossbars are low due to experience, and they can also use their own eyes and reports from service centers (in terms of aftermarket bars and accessories) to supplement that experience.

I don't have the data Tesla has, nor do I travel on roads with other Cybertrucks (I have seen three in the wild, not counting mine). I know just from common sense that the vast majority of owners will never put anything on the forward mounting points and while the rear ones will be used in somewhat higher numbers, it will still be by a minority of owners.

The great thing is Tesla can't go wrong with this move. Even if you think you absolutely need the forward crossbar mounting points, they are still there, they are not getting rid of the capability, you will just have to buy the plastic strips that have cutouts in them. That's probably $50-$75 profit for Tesla, which is a very welcome thing when you are selling the vehicle at breakeven or below.

Legacy truck makers do this all the time, they advertise the MSRP, but it never includes all the features most people will want or need.

Tow package? Open your wallet!
Tonneau cover? Open your wallet!
An audio system that doesn't sound like a bad dream? Open your wallet?
etc,
etc,
etc.

Tesla doesn't make you pay extra for these high-ticket items that many want.

Having to pay a bit more if you want the forward rack mounting points is only a big deal if your goal is to hate on Tesla. Legacy auto does this all the time, and on trucks that offer a whole lot less value to begin with.

Wait....So no one has taken delivery of one with the revised configuration yet?

So why are people claiming Tesla was sneaky about this, that they didn't tell us about it in time?

I don’t have any problem with Tesla making money on it I’m just suggesting to you that “they know” is preposterous.

The only vehicles they’ve made up till this point only have two mounting options. And since if you’re using a third-party light bar you’re going to need that forward most mounting point for every design that’s been sold up to this point then it just makes no sense.

Wether this is about efficiency cost cutting nefariousness or whatever, my question remains if you don’t know it’s there because there’s no hint given by the new appliqué and this isn’t advertised, how would you know? I guess it’s going to be up to third-party folks to tell people that the mounting hardware is there? That really seems counterproductive even if the idea is to just let people pay for it as an add-on.

Read closer. Adjustable
Front is 56 wide. Last rear 69
They have to be able to fit any of 4 positions.
