What is truly terrible is how common these things are. If you’ve bought more than one car, you’ve probably had a bad car purchase experience.
My only good experiences have been deals done by email only (Jeep, RV, and motorcycle) and my Carvana order for the Tesla.

It is institutionalizes douchebaggery.
Many have told me they "have to" because everyone else is doing it.

Intimidation must work on some number. I once had this towering, built bald black dude (race will be relevant) lean over me and actually yell at me that payments are all that matter, and I need to stop focusing on the details. I only talk OTD numbers, ever. This does not work for scumbags trying to hide fees by pushing your payments out from 48 months to 52. He actually said to me that I'd never survive in HIS hood with his bros.

I've also walked out of a finance dude's office and yelled on the floor, "CAN SOMEONE GET ME A FINANCE MANAGER WHO ISN'T A LYING WEASEL BEFORE I LEAVE??"

He actually did look like a weasel.
I had a similar salesman refusing to discuss price and only wanted to discuss payments.

I told him, $1,000 down, $250 month for 36 months. He responded that it does not come close to paying off the car. Maybe a little snarky, I told him we are discussing payments now, you adjust the price to fit into those payments.

I wonder why he did not like the $10k offer in payment for the listed ask price around $22k?

Did not buy the car.

There's a fine line between passive aggressive and just mirroring the shit you're being given. My brand of mild autism makes it hard for me to see nuanced games, and I simply go right to the numbers and specific points. One dealer recently told me I needed to move fast because the Smart will sell right away to people who really want it, the market is hot. I told him, in all honestly, that I'd feel bad taking a popular car away from someone who needs it when it's just a luxury for us. I think I heard him gasp over the phone.

After I retired from 30 years of Teaching I thought it would be fun to sell cars, I got a job at an Acura Dealership here in San Diego. I quit after 3 months, it was just too painful to go to work everyday and be part of the "circus".

I have a saying, "when you retire, you get paid a salary that will allow you to do what you want to do".
You were right. No reason to do some job, you don't want to do! Find something you enjoy.
