Battery Extender - did you order?

Tesla's going to need to do something quick. GM is dominating on the range and value side. They just released data today on 2025 trims, price, range. Anyone who claims that the Tesla network is enough to negate the need for range is missing the perspective of a large segment of the truck driving population. It's the difference between "can do something" and " can do something comfortably".

I'm been bouncing between the forums as I'm struggling with my decision. GM makes the range aspect easy. If I go CT, I'm pretty sure I'd place the deposit, but I don't not knowing the total cost, how much space it will take up, or when I'll get it.

The GM products have more range and now have access to Tesla's SC network, too.

If that's what you value the most, great.

I don't think think Tesla needs to do anything. They weren't and will not be the best in every category, but the CT is a blend of above average to great in each category plus the hard exterior/looks and Tesla's tech.

The struggle is real here. Both brands have great strengths and weaknesses, and they don't overlap. I don't have a clear winner for my use case. Confirmation of what the range extender looks like will be decider if that happens before my RN gets called.

When looking at specs, especially towing, remember to subtract trailer tongue weight from vehicle payload to see what you have left for passengers and cargo.

I put a deposit down but the more I drive the truck I figure I really don’t need it. Plus the 1/3 bed loss is annoying since now the CT boxes I have would be over the vault storage area and I would lose access.

The other thing is that the vault is not waterproof and water leaks all over the area near the back window. Which means the extended battery would be consistently covered in water during car washes and heavy rains. It already looks like crap now when it happens and makes me worry about the cooling system under those panels and where exactly that water runoff really goes.

What would be nice is is they just gave us a caption for another battery pack with extended range in place of the current one.

That is usually a seal installation issue and can be fixed.

Yep, several people on here have had theirs fixed by Tesla.

Interesting read. As far as the battery swap vs range extender....i would do both if offered. more range is my number one. but I want to tow long distances.

I am not towing anything and I live in Northern California and for me the current range of the Cyberbeast is absolutely fine for my use case. Plug it every day to 80%, increase to 100% when planning a long trip and it easily gets me 3 hours of driving when it’s time for a break.
So no need for any extender, not sure I would even pay extra for more range.

Great poll. I gambled that as a first time EV owner with the Cybertruck I would get used to Supercharger stops. It worked! Supercharger stops on my road trips aren’t that bad. In fact I now stop MORE often on road trips, to enjoy things like Buc-ee’s barbecue sandwiches while I charge for 15 minutes

When I first got my model X in 2016 I thought 250 miles (performance version) was plenty and we took long road trips… then 2 years later I started hating the frequent stops. At this point the X has a realistic range of 180 between stops (battery still says 228). I cannot take long road trips in this car anymore. So while a real world range in my truck of ~300 miles on the first leg (charged to 100%) is currently very nice, I anticipate in 5 years it will be 280, and that will start encroaching on unacceptable. Additionally I occasionally tow a camper ~400 miles (3 times a year). These are all reasons I will get the extender when it is available.

Don't tow and I prefer to carry a spare. I have the official Tesla spare wheel and tire strapped down in the same space that be occupied by the extra battery pack.

My real-world average efficiency is 336 Wh/mi over 3,000 miles of mixed driving for 350+ miles of range. Plus, I prefer to carry around less weight day-to-day, not more.

I'd probably even go for a 'Cybertruck sports edition' model with a smaller 100kwh pack, lowered ride height, shorter bed, and wider, sportier, tires on 22" rims. The Cyberute!

I have not seen this poll (I did a search) so I think it would be very interesting to find out how many of us have ordered the extender.

I have a feeling that if the take rate is low, Tesla is more likely to offer customers the Gen3 battery pack vs the installable extender. Rumer is the Gen3 cell will have 20% more power…. If you combine weight savings vs an extender, I see a world where you get 100 miles more with the gen3 cell. The other rumor is this cell will cut in the production in Q2 CY25. The battery pack is easily removable, the front seats and the center console would be transferred to the new pack. I don’t see a reason for the extender if the gen3 cell delivers on the 20% promise, combine that with a low take rate, I can’t see a world where Telsa would even bother. The costs to manufacture and install would not make sense.

We reserved. No one ordered as there is no price or timeline (only a $16,000 and 2025 guesstimate).

I don't think Tesla cares. If they did, they would have made the Cybertruck look like the what the GM Silverado EV looks like and called it the Model T lol. And I wouldn't be owning one.

That kind of thought process isn't good for business. We're not talking design or software here, this is a utility and market share issue. You have guys like me that are literally hanging on the balance. The Tesla is good enough that I'm debating it with something that would clearly work better for me with 120 more miles of range. If the range delta were close, the CT would be a clear winner. For now, it's not so clear cut. A vague promise of a range extender sometime in the future isn't a reassuring answer.
