I was just digging around for a rear bumper solution that could stop minor parking lot dings and look decent. I did not want to by that metal bumper from eBay as I really wanted a clean finish. The nice thing about this step is that it slides into the receiver and easy to remove when towing is needed. Also this website has it very inexpensive, just make sure you click FREE shipping and turn off insurance etc to get lowest rate. There are several holes where you can mount it out further, I have it on the inner most position. I kind of like it, also wife approved. :) ~$143.00 USD

Can you show a photo using it as a step to put in/take out from the bed?

Does it reach far enough to the side to help when the gate is down?

Step for what? That's not going work with the tailgate down.
There are a list of benefits some are higher than others. Focusing on just one is disingenuous.
Certainly there are times as well when you want something quickly out of the back when your tailgate is up ... for example if something is blocking the tailgate (wall, pole, etc) and just saying everyone should just pull their truck forward because that is what I'd do. /s

To answer a few of the questions:

1) Yes, it is angled & rough coat material so muddy shoes should not be an issue
2) The hitch mount will take the impact, but it's low enough where a vehicle should slide up and impact your 'real' bumper during a high-speed event. I bought this more for people tapping into the rear bumper and hopefully prevent rear plastic bumper scuffs. (or if I back into something, lol)
3) I didn't need it as a step, but I can reach over a foot more into the bed. also, you don't need to step on the plastic bumper. The bar can be mounted another 4-5" out to be a little more ease of use.
4) It will not work if the door is down, not in the position I have its in.
5) it is a 48" bar, so it does not reach the ends of the truck to use with the door down.

To reiterate, I really bought it as a rear bumper scuff protection that is easily removable (instead of a clear wrap), just like the bumper/bull bar on the front of my CB.

Another version that takes a very low impact (absorbers). I have their previous model on my '17 TMX.

I got that one as well. The science of it mediating rear impact energy convinced me, and it is great to step on and get into the bed. I've had a lot of clients who got rear-ended and anything to absorb some of the energy is good with me.

Only downside is finessing a locking hitch pin into the space the CT has for it. Takes an extra minute or two with my fat fingers.

Options
Extender if you want to step up with the tailgate down
Short step of you are ok stepping over tailgate

I’m thinking short step, after in the bed, I can drop the tailgate down, walk out and jump out
I like the robustness of the short step

Please post an action photo stepping into the bed from the 48” bar
Did not seem it had a good foot landing spot
