Correct- PCS is considered part of the mid voltage system, not high voltage system- which makes no real sense because it converts the higher voltage system to 48 volts… so its technically part of both… but not covered under the hv system and drivetrain 8yr/150k warranty despite it being vital to the functioning of the vehicle.
The extended warranty isn't for the HV system, it's for the battery (distinct from the full pack assembly) and the drive units.

Oh i was under the impression it covers the whole hv system not just the battery.

This is more a general EV electronics problem; some portion of power conversion units fail. It's right where there's the most possible heat and so a minor solder or semiconductor failure and... It stops working right.

It's basically the same stuff as what's in a power supply for a laptop or PC - and is the most common failure points in those, too.

Just sucks when it's yours.

Yeah. I agree that’s worrisome. I have heard a fair amount about PCS failure.
Anyone here had to replace this out of warranty? What did it cost?

Said it cost $7200 out of warranty to replace.

OK so here's the conclusion.

First the car would only charge at 24A with my home L2 charger.
A couple days later, it won't charge at all with my home L2 charger.
I tried supercharger and it didn't work either.
The service screen shoed PCS issues.

I booked an appointment for service which was a couple weeks out.
I noticed that the SOC was dropping by the day so I requested to come in earlier, which they said was OK.

I brought the car in at around 12% SOC.
Initially they wanted to charge me $300 just to inspect the car to see what the problem is -- claiming it could be due to rodent etc (wtf) -- I pushed back hard and said it's clearly a PCS issue which is still under warranty. I had to fight tooth and nail, asking for a manager, to get this through w/o charge. Not a good experience.

They replaced the PCS within a couple days and everything is working fine now.

Throughout this process, I noticed that they just let the battery drain to 0%...I messaged them about it, upon which they said they'd plug it in immediately but nothing was done. I understand that the PCS was broken so clearly they can't charge it using regular means. But I was surprised to find that they didn't have other means to charge it -- or didn't bother to investigate/try.

Throughout this process, I did not get any loaner because none was available when I turned in my car. When a loaner became available, they messaged me and said it was first come first serve -- they said they can't reserve it, not even for a couple minutes. I immediately Uber'ed over only to find no loaner available. Honestly I don't know who is the idiot that thinks this is a good policy.

At the end I didn't have to pay anything because my car was still under warranty.
But super concerned about next time when my car is no longer within warranty.

On the bright side, my MX and CT have been super reliable over the years. But when things do break it sounds like the repair cost is astronomical, and super inconvenient due to the horrible service.

@sammy5001, glad you had a good resolution on the truck. The service department experience sounds trying. Hopefully they improve that loaner system to account for someone traveling to pick up the loaner!

The $7,200 cost cited seems excessive. I'm guessing that it included other work. For reference, my PCS replacement cost me $2,730, of which the hardware was $1,785+tax and labor was 4.2 hours. I guess it's possible that my cost was reduced as a courtesy since I was only 10k out of warranty at the time, but I was not told that it was reduced.

Just to add to chorus -- after the last update the same thing happened to me. My truck stopped charging at 48 amps on my gen 3 connector at home. There were three alerts visible in service mode, one involving the PCS. Opened a ticket and they confirmed it.

Bad news is the part is now under limited availability. For what it's worth, I heard unofficially that the newer firmware tightened the spec on the self test pass/fail when the PCS fires up. It may be they are trying to detect the failure sooner to address it.

Will report back what happens...

Bumping this thread up. My CT will all the sudden only charge at 24A. 48A no problem on my MY. Looks like a service center trip is in my future (again).
