Nope, I had to use #4. Code for 60 amp circuit to get 48 amps at the charger. About 30-ft run.

For a 60A circuit, the wire needs to be copper 6AWG THx type (75C column) in conduit/raceway or #4 NM-B (60C column) (Romex style).
Can also do #4 Aluminum THx, but that requires transition to copper before the the Wall Connector.

Mine was Romex (new work in house under construction, hence #4 as stated. Even with conduit, I personally would still go with #4 for insurance.

That's not "insurance", it's overkill. When using THWN or THHN copper in conduit, AWG #6 has a huge margin of safety built-in.

If you want "insurance", hardwire it (eliminate the NEMA 14-50) and pay extra attention to the way the wires are routed and formed near the terminals (and of course the proper torqueing of the screw terminals). These are where problems might crop up if not installed correctly, not in selecting a wire gauge that meets code.
