For some reason, the “cheap gas is ruining the case for EVs” debate suddenly seems less relevant right now
I was wondering if someone was going to state the obvious. Before me, that is. LOL

My guess is that electrification will drive down demand, and thus price, to the point that lower profitability causes consolidation. (We would still pump oil even if there were zero cars, since it has other uses, but at far lower volumes.). This is decades in the future, mind you, so I don't need to worry about being wrong lol.

This consolidation will constrain supply until prices rise again. Eventually gas will become hard to find! "Oh noes, ICE range anxiety"
Actually there is a big problem. All the other uses for oil are for the byproducts of gas and diesel production. Lowered gas and diesel production leads to lowered byproducts production. Yeah, it is possible to change one type of long chain hydrocarbon into another, but that takes energy. So it also ups cost.

Cheaper electric energy and less demand for gas and CNG lowers the energy cost of processing the chains.

War is causing gas prices to go up.

AI is causing electricity prices to go up.

As far as I can tell, war might not be indefinite, but AI sure is.

I think if you look at our history you will find that war is definitely a constant. Sun shines everywhere, wind blows all over. Batteries do what they do.

We could’ve been energy independent, slow down some of the environmental damage and be leading the world into the future like we did in the past, but we’ve chosen a different course and ceded the future to China. Stupid is as stupid does.

Some people just refuse to believe that fat meat is greasy. The universe doesn’t care what you believe, but it has infinite patience and has no problem teaching lessons the hard way.

Wars have been eternal, but they are also cyclical. In my lifetime there's been more periods where gas has been cheap due to high production, than expensive due to disruption (i.e. - war).

With that said, I agree with you 100% we need to change our view on energy. But what you and I believe is very much unimportant, the policymakers need to make these changes. There hasn't been investment in solar or clean energy on a scale that makes a difference. Even passing the cost to individuals via subsidized credits hasn't been popular and has mostly ceased, that was an easy out for policymakers to only pay a portion of the transition.

In a country where people are horribly politically divided, the strange bi-partisan issue is energy. In NY state the vast majority of people hate moving to electric appliances and heat pumps. The most liberal and conservative people both hate EVs. At least we have unity?
