Cold Feet and ICE

So…
I’m supposed to take delivery of my CT very soon (this week?).

I currently drive a new Silverado Trail Boss Z71 with a V8 and a nice custom grumbly exhaust.

While driving the last few days, I’m remembering how much I love the physical feedback when mashing the accelerator - the lurching and the roar of the exhaust.

I’ve driven a Model 3 once, but never owned an EV, so I’m starting to worry…

Am I going to end up being heartbroken? Haha

Just curious of others’ experience and thoughts…

I found my M3 and CT to be far superior to an ICE vehicle in many ways. The acceleration is just amazing. When I get into an ICE vehicle, it is the sad sound of the engine laboring as it goes through the gears sound so old fashioned. With the Tesla, it is just pure acceleration. Suddenly the ICE becomes ridiculous! Now I have become sensitive to exhaust fumes. The last time I filled up my ICE truck (before selling it), I was gaging on the gasoline fumes in the station. How gross is that? Let me say, I made my fortune in the oil business. Yes, we pillaged the Earth for oil. Oil has served us well, but now it is time to move on into the future. We will always need some oil, but your house with a wall charge becomes a perfect way to wake up every morning with a full tank of electrons (Like owning your own gas station!). And you can raise the middle finger to high priced gasoline!

Especially the OTA updates Tesla provides. We have had over 100 software updates in the 6 years of M3 ownership. Today I tried the Beach Buggy video game in my CT. It was fun and made me laugh. There is absolutely no comparison to an ICE vs EV. The EV may not be the ideal cross-country vehicle yet, but it is sure a sweet ride around town!

I hope you see this through. I think you'll love the change. Very few people go back to ICE after experiencing a Tesla. The CT is the pinnacle of Tesla engineering (and design imo). It may not be perfect for everyone but there is a very good chance you will love it. Don't try to put this car into an existing mold (exhaust, noise, slow, leaking, etc.) associated with ICE. Let the new paradigm take you on a new ride. Quiet, instantaneous response, charged every morning, fun for the whole family, efficient, futuristic, etc. This is all before FSD gets uploaded. And kudos for giving this a try. You probably have already taken the hardest step.

I was very much like you once. I find comparing ICE and EVs to be a meaningless exercise now, they're just too different. It's a big paradigm shift, but a worthwhile one.

You know, I can always tell when someone is new to EVs (<5 years) because they still have their battery read out in miles/km. After a while you realize that distance is far too relative and percentage just makes more sense. In a similar way, you'll wonder why you ever thought sticking to gas was ever a good idea.

I drive across multiple state lines all the time in my model 3, I've never wished I could just go fill up at a gas station to save time. I thought I would, but you quickly get used to the pattern of going pee every 2.5 hours and grabbing a snack that if you ever road trip in a gas car again you'll find the concept of pushing through 5 hour sprints to be repulsive. Strange how things have changed, never saw it coming, and I like it so much better.

I traded in the same truck. I loved my trail boss. Bought it the moment they came out in 2019. Also did exhaust. I had the same fears the week leading up to my CT delivery.

Within 10 minutes, I had completely forgotten about the Chevy. My wife loved it too, but made numerous statements on the 3 hour drive home how much more comfortable the Tesla was inside to ride in. The Chevy was out last gas vehicle in the garage. I was apprehensive. 2 weeks in, this is the first I’ve thought of the Chevy. I don’t miss it at all, and I can’t stop driving the CT.

As someone who often complains about the lack of physical keyboards on modern phones, I'm now having a crisis. Do I need to go back to ICE?

Well, my other vehicle currently is a 2019 Z71 Trail boss custom. I have not driven it once since i took delivery of my CT about two weeks ago. If i didn't have to tow a horse trailer hundreds of miles a couple times per year, it would be gone. It's in a word, terrible, compared to my CT.

The CT is superior in every way except range, including the the things you mention. Every time I drive an ice vehicle everything seems muted in comparison, especially steering and acceleration.

Definitely the buzzsaw noise of my CT and the instant acceleration that feels like a jet taking off is better than the roar of big bore engine.

You will! I don't know a single person that has gone from Gas to EV and regretted it.

I'll step aside as I am an early adopter uber-geek. However, I will tell you the transformation I saw my wife go through. She is a Luddite (actually she isn't but compared to me...). She has always loved the low rumbly sound of old high-displacement trucks. For her 40th birthday, I got her a Peacekeeper edition Harley Davidson Softail Classic with Vance and Hines pipes and she LOVED IT!
A few years ago, I finally convinced her to let me replace her Camry with a Model S. (she used to drive a 69 Ford but the HD satisfied her need for rumble). Rented an S on Turo for her and that plus me saying "We can always sell it if you don't like it" convinced her to try it (I have been driving electric since 2011). Got her a P100D. Jump to the present. She loves her Tesla and won't give it up for anything. She now *hates* loud cars. Have heard her say "If you are going to make that much noise you should have something to show for it". There once was a day when those cars were considered fast - now they look silly. There really isn't any going back. Once you experience the efficiency, power, and ride quality of an EV all ICE's feel like an old, wired, rotary phone.
