So, I finally got out for my first trip towing with my CyberBeast and things were generally going about how I expected. Based on this hundred mile round-trip up from 2000 to about 9000ft my range looks like it’ll be somewhere between 120 and 160 miles towing my small “square drop-ish” kind of trailer.

I was planning for this post to be about that range and my experience, but I have to say I was floored by my discovery of a huge limitation that I’ve not seen anybody mention before.

You can’t go into off-road mode while you’re towing a trailer? WTF? Without being able to engage the various settings in off-road mode the CB just isn’t good enough off-road we saw that before the locking diff and other features were enabled.

I didn’t go to the main trails that I would normally go with my FJ and this trailer and thank God that would’ve been a really unpleasant surprise to get stuck somewhere that my FJ can easily traverse.

Many trailers these days are far more off-road capable than my little tiger moth but it can keep up with quite a bit so I’m just perplexed how did I miss this? Why isn’t anybody complaining about this I couldn’t be the first person to discover it? Has there been discussion about this being enabled in a future software update? What the heck!?

I’ve accepted the compromises that come with this rig in terms of range etc. I already came to peace with not getting the 500 miles that I really need so that I can actually tow to a location and enjoy myself for a few days and then come back to civilization But potentially not being able to get there at all was not part of the deal.

Not trying to be overly negative here but I am really just kind of stunned.

Photos didn’t attach for some reason …

EDIT: Workaround is just simply detach the connector and put the truck in off-road mode.

Nice trailer setup. Just exit trailer mode after you're hooked up, then select off road mode. Get back out there.

Trailer mode provides cruise control type adjustments not needed off road and trailer braking. No trailer braking off road seems minor.

Yeah, I was so stunned momentarily by the revelation that I stopped using my brain. Not only can you just turn it off you can plug the trailer back in after you enter off-road mode and get your brake lights and what not back.

I’m also just hoping that Elon will eventually realize that this is something that we need and have us be able to turn both on so long as we click on some type of acknowledgment that we understand damage to our truck or trailer is our problem.

Thanks! The guy who designed it used to be a NASA engineer and when I was looking for a trailer, a couple of years ago, I gravitated towards his designs because of the angularity and obviously I already knew I was getting a cybertruck I just thought I would have it a long time ago.

If anyone wants to know more: https://taxaoutdoors.com/products/t...MgouWhV9W-LiSNNca48FFMHHaq5OmV89SwCmocX_0yc_X

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful and helpful replies!

As another data point, I've towed my Taxa Mantis a couple of times now and would estimate I'm somewhere in the 120-140 mile range with my dual motor CT. This would be at full highway speeds (e.g., 70mph) over mostly flat ground towing across the northern half of MN. Slowing down to 55-60 mph would increase that quite a bit if my experience towing the same trailer with a Model Y is any indication. Here's me on the left charging in Bemidji a few weeks ago:

Cool! I had to check and make sure that this wasn’t your post, but, I forgot he had a cricket instead of a mantis.

Take the luggage carriers off the trailer and you may see a significant range increase. Those things significantly impact range in ICE vehicles.

I might check it out, but I’m pretty happy with that set up. If it really is significant I might have to relent.
