For people like me that like the cybertent solution and dont want roof racks efficiency hits, I finally found a good shade solution that doesn’t require a rack mounted awning.

It’s a tailgate hitch mounted umbrella. It’s a very pricy $1,700, but it seems super quick to deploy and tear down, truck mounted, wind and rain resistant and free standing.

Curious what you all think of it or if you know of anything as good as this that’s less expensive.

We have a pull out kitchen drawer setup and this will be perfect for some shade cooking up sole grub or just escaping the sun and chilling.

Not sure…………… but did you say 1700.00 for an umbrella?

Sweet baby jesus, what else does it do for that amount of money?
The advantage it has is, non-permanent and removable, unlike the Urander and Camper top solutions, and it's large enough to provide a temporary "tent" and shade from the sun, yes it is pricey, but provides shade and a temporary shelter, and has an aluminum frame, that's why it's pricey

I’m a huge fan of hitch mounted hammocks. I have one on my camper van and it’s 👍🏻👍🏻

I have the bare bones XL.

I know, the price seems way too excessive TBH. A quick google search easily finds a hitch umbrella holder for ~$100. And you can mount any large umbrella; 15’x10’ for < $200.

I can appreciate a well designed product, but ~$1,700 seems way too steep. $700 seems more reasonable. It doesn’t have to be light weight, it just needs to be strong and wind resistant.

I suppose the truck anchors the thing down but I'd probably just plop $150 down and get one of these 12x12 canopy things. You could tie it to the CT if you really just wanted it to be attached to your truck. There's a 10x10 version as well if you are tailgating.

If you are camping and space is at a premium, but you still want to be connected to the truck with a shade, $1,700 could be worth it to you. But, for the casual user or tailgater, I can't see the $1,700 version being $1,500 better.

I ended up getting a $100 umbrella and a $60 hitch umbrella holder. We are indeed camping and space is indeed tight.

The hitch mounted umbrella seems to be the easiest solution, even compared to the popup canopy. Sometimes there’s hard rock below and wind (moab) and I don’t want to worry about having to anchor the canopy to the ground or trying to tie it somehow awkwardly to the truck.

Being able to quickly pull it out without help for a quick pit stop meal and then quickly put it back and keep moving is the scenario I’m optimizing for.

Doing some MTB maintenance under my $160 umbrella setup during a long supercharge in Moab.
