Well, we know for a fact that the test rides immediately after the event were delayed while they replaced the window glass. I've seen video of someone carrying the glass at the event. So, I'm guessing at the time, there was only one CT.There was a CT on stage but wasn't there a CT giving rides soon after? I wonder how many CTs exist for Elon's use, testing etc. I guess they were made in Fremont? It seems likely that there is a prototype production line in Fremont to make the exoskeleton and the tooling of this line will make CTs for crash testing, and test the innovations that are evolving in engineering (maybe suggestions from this site?) like the pass through for the vault.
Perhaps there is a handful of CTs, dozens?
Good point. But if I remember right, the dask from the truck in the museum matches the dash from the Leno episode. And people said they could see slight dents in the door from the sledgehammer at the museum. This leads me to believe they're all the same truck, but that would also mean they swapped the dash, which seems odd unless they made several other modifications to that prototype.The dash in the Jay Leno's Garage episode is different from the unveiling. I say at least two functional.
They would need to build more to refine the design and tweak the manufacturing methods. Plus there will need to be vehicles for crash testing and environmental testing. The tooling that ultimately is installed in Austin will be based on what they currently use albeit much more of it.It is 8 months since the thing was revealed. I just realized this myself and it sent me here looking for answers.To my knowledge, there's one confirmed truck. The one at the unveiling seems to be the same one from the Leno special, the museum, and all of Musk's outings in the truck. Someone might know better than me though.

Unless they have to crash several hundred, not at all for must of us.They need to build various parts and pieces to work out the manufacturing process, but I don't see the point of multiple hand-built prototypes. I'm sure they do most of their engineering in CAD or with mockups.
Keep in mind that Tesla will need to manufacture a few for destructive crash testing. I wonder how that affects the delivery timeline?
