That looks so good I would be tempted to also do the 2 plastic sail trim pieces that are part of the recall.

Hell I bet a line-x over the whole truck would look amazing. Ideally in a military tan/sand color.
Like the Hummer H1 Alpha! What a game changer in the entire vehicle armor world...I saw one not too long ago and thought the same RE CT.

Still looks like new..I'm thinking of coating the sail trim also.
Please update with the results if you do. I am considering the same. LineX all plastic surfaces, it protect them from scratches, which a lot of people are saying is very common. Also LineX has a lifetime warranty from bubbling, flaking and fading.

Plastic parts I would like to get done:
  • Front bumper
  • Rear bumper
  • Mirrors
  • Wheel fenders
  • Wheel aero parts
  • mud flaps
  • Sail trim
  • rocker panel

Any idea how much something like this adds to the weight and would that have any material impact on range? For around $1500 (haven't checked locally just going by what OP said), this seems like a way better deal then close to $1000 for all the TOProtect textured vinyl pieces.

The weight is negligible. Two three or pounds at the most. I did not do the sails yet since they are most likely being replaced under warrently. The glue holding the molding is failing and there also have reports of a couple flying off.

The top of the lift gate plastic is very slick, like all the other Pops mentioned above. As long as it is "preped" correctly the lineX material bonds to it great..no issues as of yet.

Thanks for starting this thread, @CactusPilot! The liner you had put on your bed looks great and I've been watching the thread to see if you ended up doing the side sails. Between the Cybertent scratching up my sails after multiple uses and my tailgate cap taking a beating from a washer and dryer move, I finally bit the bullet and decided to give those parts a go with my local Line-X dealer. I did a bit of research in hopes of avoiding a major headache, and thought I would share my findings in case others want to attempt the same thing.

The Line-X dealer I took my truck to told me they would remove the sail trim and tailgate cap for spraying and that they would need to primer the plastic first, which is common for Line-X on plastic parts. I had literally just gotten my sail trim pieces replaced as part of the recall, so I figured I would look into what is needed to remove those again and I am glad I did because there is a note in the service steps for the sail applique and tailgate applique stating not to reuse the parts after removal:

Left Hand Sail: https://service.tesla.com/docs/Cybe...UID-1EFBCFAB-294C-4757-A2C1-DF6BA6B4C80A.html

Right Hand Sail: https://service.tesla.com/docs/Cybe...UID-415D63EA-024A-4B3D-8BC7-78356E4B7F71.html

Tailgate: https://service.tesla.com/docs/Cybe...UID-C8F2EB42-D393-448C-A1E9-9FC1830220D5.html

Initially, I thought it may just be out of an abundance of caution because of the potential for clips to break, but then I watched this video of someone removing the sail applique:

Given the number of clips that popped off and ended up in the truck body, I was concerned the Line-X shop may be able to get the sails off, but if they lost clips along the way, I'd have no side sails to reapply, no Line-X coating, and I'd have to wait for replacement parts to get everything put back together.

I decided to drive to my local Tesla service center and inquire about purchasing the parts brand new and just taking them to the Line-X dealer for them to coat and get to me when they're done. To my surprise, they actually had all three parts in stock and I was able to pick them up right then and there for $357.23 after tax. I dropped them off at the Line-X dealership just a little bit ago, along with the aeroflap from the front of the bed. I decided to have that piece done as well, just so there is a uniform coat and color to all the parts surrounding the tonneau cover, plus it will make the aeroflap a little more durable when it's removed for the Cybertent to be set up.

These are the part numbers I picked up today:

Left sail - 1741538-00-G
Right sail - 1741539-00-G
Tailgate cap - 1812376-00-C

I probably won't have the parts back from the Line-X shop until Monday because I am going out of town this weekend, but I figured I'd share this info for now and I can post pictures next week once I get the parts back and swapped out.

FWIW, the Line-X dealer said it'll be between $400-$500 to have all four parts sprayed with their Platinum product. That should provide the best durability and UV resistance. The price is a little higher than one might expect because they said there will be a decent amount of material waste. Apparently the gun shoots a 3’-4’ wide area and none of these parts are more than 5”-6” wide. ?‍♂

We’ll see how it turns out and if it ends up being a huge mistake, at least I know what it’ll cost to replace the parts back to stock. ?

Glad to have helped. I'm very happy so far with the durability of the Linex. No peeling issues so far. I have not coated the sails, since they are on recall and I've been super busy to take the truck in.

I have a couple recalls (sails, and wiper motor) to take care of, and I've been dragging my feet. Wishfully thinking the light bar will be available soon, so I can get everything done at the same time.

Keep us posted on the sails with pics..thanks.

For the sails, they just pop up…but with the sail recall they also have a lot of 3M double sided tape. My Tesla tech let me watch him do the recall installation and he straightened out the top so it was flush with the roof. He had to pull it off at the top, bend up some of the steel, add a plastic washer and he needed to reapply some double sided tape because once you pull the sail up, it’s toast. So if you have the sails linexed, be sure to remove the old double sided tape and reapply it with new stuff. Be sure it’s the super strong stuff made for vehicles.

Got the parts back this afternoon and they were easy enough to swap out. The side sails come with the double sided tape already on the parts, so it was a matter of pulling up the old sails, using alcohol to clean the surface where the tape sticks to the metal, then installing the new sails.

Two things of note, I did lose most of the clips when removing the sails and lost a couple from the tailgate cap, so I can see why Tesla's stance is these parts are not reusable for the clips alone. On the sails, though, there is a push nut that needs to be installed and I suspect it may be part of the recall (e.g. the push nut was added to prevent the sails from lifting enough to come off). Because I just had my sails replaced recently, I had to cut the post the push nut was on in order to remove the old sails, thus rendering them unusable. I used needle nose pliers to hold the bottom part of the post the push nut was on and cut the top so I could at least reuse the push nut and not lose those parts in the body of the truck.

I do have an issue with the areas around the cross bar mounts where it seems the shop didn't primer that area well enough and the Line-X material isn't sticking, so I'll have to follow up with them on that. Overall, I'm relatively happy with how it turned out and it should definitely make things more durable. Whether or not it was worth the cost and effort will be up to each individual to decide. FWIW, it ended up being less than expected for the Line-X at $389.70 so between that and the parts cost of $357.23, the total for me to have this done was $746.93.

Here are some pictures (in no particular order) of the parts before, during, and after installation along with a close up of the push nut referenced in the service manual.

@bwilliam79 That turned out so great! Thank you for taking the time and effort to document all of this for us. I will 100% be undertaking this effort. I have yet to have my recall taken care of and I will ask Tesla to simply hand me the new parts so I can get the LineX applied before they are installed.

I might even do an experiment and try a DIY job of using some spray on bed liner before I get my recall done so I can get them replaced if/when it goes badly.

Wow nice work at $1500 that actually sounds reasonable for that level of work.
I agree. But the buyer needs to make a purchase decision on the potential benefits it provides, not how hard it was to do the job.

And that's where I'm left scratching my head. How do I get $1500 of value out of this? Unlike traditional truck beds, the Cybertruck bed is super tough, it doesn't need a liner. Even with normal scratching from hard use, it's still going to look fine. The black color goes all the way through and it can never crack or peel off.

What happens if the sprayed on liner starts to crack and peel off? Sounds like it would look ugly.

Have done this to all my trucks and was hoping Tesla would already have it with the CT. Good on ya ??
I'm guessing your other trucks just had a painted metal bed. They can be very slick when wet and ugly as the paint scratches. The Cybertruck bed avoids these issues.

This is my third truck and spray lining the bed if one of the best things you can do to it if actually using the bed. Although Tesla's come with some sort of coating...it will scratch and get damaged. Coating it just adds another layer of protection.
No, the Cybertruck bed doesn't come with any type of coating, it is made from a tough composite material and the color goes all the way through. Once you coat it you can never return it to stock condition, but if you leave it stock, you can always coat it whenever you decide.

I’ll be honest, when I saw the title, I was terrified that you had coated the stainless steel. That looks nice though.
But seeing how “easy” the whole thing came out, finding the price of completely replacing the bed pan vs the Line-X might be worth comparing. It’s probably cheaper to Linex, but that will only protect against so much, if something gets through, you would have paid for LineX and a new bed pan. Probably do a in-depth risc analysis. There could be a strong chance there might be an aftermarket replacement for the whole bed, made of something much stronger at somepoint
