EV's being allowed to use the HOV lanes didn't cost tax payers money outside of the cost of issuing a sticker. It did encourage people to purchase EV's which reduces pollution. Doing away with HOV so more cars can drive in the lane doesn't reduce pollution because a lane or two isn't going to make a difference to traffic but getting rid of gas powered cars does make a difference. Las Vegas has a huge number of EV's and over the last 10 years as more are on the road we have had noticeably fewer days of bad air quality. Less bad air quality also correlates to a drop in health care costs over a persons life time. Lower childhood asthma rates as well. I drive an EV because it is better for the environment, it is fun to drive and overall has a lower cost of ownership. The only reason the federal government pushed this rule to get rid of allowing EV's to use HOV lanes was to "stick it to the libs". I doubt it will hurt EV sales, getting rid of the EV tax credit probably will hurt EV sales to some degree. Reducing clean air standards, rolling back CAFE standards all will serve to undo the work that has been done to clean the air which will make everyone sicker and cost everyone more. It is sad that is the nation we live in now.

EVs needed to prove equality with ICE vehicles - Elon’s first manifesto. He also stated opposition to federal EV tax credits several times. Rich people driving expensive cars should not have special status, full stop.

Well, that freaking stinks. Looks like I’m going back to the regular license plate. Why should I give $200+ to the GDOR if I don’t have any benefits for having it.
Changing plate won't save you much money. The annual tag fee is based on vehicle type. I have the Alt fuel plate on the beast and not on my wife's Model Y. We both pay the 250ish. The Alt fuel plate was only needed for the single occupant HOV lane and had a $20ish dollar addon fee.

Interesting. My CyberBeast is actually the cheapest EV I’ve owned. My Tycan was $200K. Lucid Air was $150K. MB EQS SUV was $140K. Before I got AFV on any of them I had regular plates and they were only $25. My MB S580 which is $150K is only $25 too. When you say type? What does that mean exactly? Obviously, it looks like it doesn’t matter how expensive the vehicle is.

Ev vs non. For my kids ice car I paid $35 a year same rate for either of my kids cars. Give or take a few bucks. Not saying exact but that's the ballpark. It's just a tag fee every year not vat.

For both of my EVs I pay over $250 a year tag fee each. Same tag as my kids ice cars. Because they're electric there's an EV fee charged.

In Georgia we're no longer charged based on the value of the car each year. As we now pay a tax at purchase.

Well that will never happen because ICE vehicles still get subsidies and they will not end oil and gas subsidies because it will increase costs for gas, transportation and food. Plus right wing groups like ALEC have handed legislation to states to pass to hobble EV's by putting an additional alternative vehicle tax on their plates. So EV owners will pay more and ICE owners get a break. Making it fair no subsidies for anyone would be great but it is naive to think that would actually happen. Now my tax dollars go to keep gas prices down and in some states EV owners pay extra to save money.

I missed it here in CO shortly after I got my ModelS, but I never would have used it if I would of had to put one of those ugly stickers on my car.

There are no actual oil and gas subsidies. That is a liberal myth. I teach an economics course that goes through this claim and demolishes it. The added EV “tax” is simple math and I already pay it in two states (Virginia and Florida) - it is a replacement for the unpaid road taxes that ICE cars pay through fuel taxes. In fact, in VA, there is a tax on all highly efficient vehicles, including hybrids, basically anything getting over 30 MPG. It is assessed at licensing, and is intended to replace the unpaid fuel taxes. We do not have free roads in the U.S. - they are not funded from general tax revenues, but are paid by end users, which is only fair. You need to question more and lose your liberal bias.

I will continue to use the HOV lane when I’m alone.. I’ll just see it as the fee going up from $20 to $500 (CA Fine)

I love it. My wife recently made the point that with all the rowe vs wade arguments being made, saying that she’s pregnant or thinks she’s pregnant is potentially a way to argue out of one of those tickets. I’m not a lawyer but seems to me if you’re going to argue something has personhood rights, that’s a pretty solid argument.
it’s at least controversial enough to give a cop or a judge pause.
Here in California I might be able to iD as a woman and say I'm pregnant.😬

I mean, if you’re going to go by “them” or “they” that’s arguably plural language and therefore ok to be in the HOV anyway.
